Change in Registration Status

a. Subject to approval by Senate, a postgraduate candidate may transfer from full-time to part-time or vice versa provided that the candidate shall have put in a minimum of six months in the previous programme. On approval of the transfer the effective period of registration shall be calculated as specified in section 11(b) below.

No candidate shall be allowed to change his registration status six months to the completion of the on-going programme.

b. Computation of Effective Period of Registration
i. Master’s Degree Programme
The approved maximum period of duration of three (3) years for full-time and four (4) years for part-time will be used for conversions, i.e. 4/3 x P for full-time to part-time and 3/4 x P for part-time to full-time where P = period spent already.

ii. Ph.D Programme
The approved maximum period of duration of five (5) years for full-time and seven (7) years for part-time will be used for conversion, i.e. 7/5 x P for full time to part-time and 5/7 x P for part-time to full-time where P = period spent already.

Modes of Study

1. Postgraduate Diploma
A study for the postgraduate diploma shall be pursued by course work to be examined in written papers together with research work to be presented in a project report. The units assigned to the project report shall not exceed one third of the total credit units for the programme.

2. Master’s Degree
A study for the degree of Master’s shall be pursued either by:
comprehensive course work to be examined in written papers together with original research work to be presented in a thesis/dissertation. The credit units assigned to the thesis/dissertation shall not exceed 1/3 not be less than ¼ of the total course credit units for the programme. The minimum work load for a Master’s degree programme is 32 units including dissertation/thesis.

3. Ph.D Degree
A study for the Ph.D degree shall be pursued by comprehensive research to be presented in a thesis; no credit units shall be assigned to a Ph.D programme but a Department may prescribe a number of relevant courses and/or seminars which the candidate shall pass in order to graduate. Grades obtained in such courses or seminars shall be for record purposes only.
