Ph.D Programme in CYTOGENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING
Staff The main objectives of introducing the PhD programme in Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding is to train our graduates to acquire advanced knowledge and skills with practical exposure in various specialties of applied botany so that they can take up careers especially in our Universities and research institutes. The internal postgraduate training programme will not only reduce cost of sending our Academic staff to other institutions outside and within the country, but it will also enable these graduates to help in teaching in the department and contribute to the development of the department while under training. The University will benefit by training the staff in areas relevant to its needs and also attract research grants from industries and government in specific programmes. The PhD programme in Botany will be by research (Project). The candidate will be expected to cover a specialized area of Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding during his/her project with scope wide enough and of relevance to our immediate environment. COURSE DURATION Full time PhD candidates are required to spend 24 months while Part-time PhD candidates are required to spend 36 months. ENTRY / GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All candidates for the PhD must, in addition to satisfying the postgraduate school requirements for admission, also satisfy the following requirements. (a) Have an M.Sc. or M.Tech or its equivalent in Botany from a recognized University. (b) Candidates with M.Sc. or M.Tech. in other disciplines such as Biology: Biochemistry, Agriculture, or any other qualification acceptable to the Senate of Federal University of Technology, Yola can be considered for admission. Where deficiencies are observed candidates will be required to sit for a specified examination and remedy such deficiencies. A minimum of eight credits to a maximum of ten credit units. All remedy exams should be passed with a minimum of a C- grade. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS In order to qualify for a PhD degree, candidates are required to meet the following: (1) Undertake laboratory based original investigation research in the candidates chosen specialty under close supervision of a supervisory committee. (2) Present a written thesis to panel of examiners including an external examiner.

The areas of specialization include: (2) Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding. (3) Plant Ecology and Phytosociology. (4) Plant Pathology. (5) Plant Resource Management.
