PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
INTRODUCTION
The demand for professional technology teachers within the current 6–3-3-4
National Policy on Education in Nigeria is daily outstripping supply due
to increased student population, low staff turnover and “brain-drain”,.
To ameliorate the dearth of such teachers, there is a need, to amongst
other things, accelerate production of professional technology teachers
at the postgraduate diploma level. Hence, a step forward is taken to implement
Federal Government of Nigeria’s National Policy on Education, especially
the Federal Government’s directives on the on-going in-service Technical
Teacher Training Programme (TTTP) in Nigeria.
PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the PGDTE of the Department of Technology Education
is to provide potential/servicing technology teachers with pedagogical
competencies amongst other things. The philosophy will aim at reinforming
the teacher requirements at all teaching-learning settings as stated by
the national educational policy.
OBJECTIVES
The main purpose of the PGDTE Programme is to equip potential or practicing
technology teachers who do not possess pedagogical qualifications. Thus
the Programme is aimed providing professional expertise in selected teaching
areas of technology within the national educational system such as outlined
b the National Policy on Education. The teaching areas broadly include
agriculture, business trades, catering practice and industrial technology.
