PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
The
Postgraduate Diploma in Management (DM) Programme is designed to provide
advanced training to holders of first degree in Management or its
equivalent in order to enhance their capability to enable them perform
effectively in managerial positions.
The
programme is also of great relevance to persons with higher degrees
but had no formal training in Management. Therefore, the programme
is interdisciplinary in nature and seeks to prepare candidates for
managerial positions.
The
programme will enable candidates acquire adequate knowledge in management
principles and modern quantitative techniques in Accountancy, Banking
and Finance, Personnel Management among others. The courses will also
provide great opportunity for the candidates to acquire competence
and conceptual skills necessary for effective management of organisations
both in the private and public sectors.
The
Postgraduate Diploma in Management Programme offers six areas of specialisation
from which candidates may choose one of the functional areas of management
viz: Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Personnel and Human Resources
Management, Industrial and Labour Relations, General Management, Marketing
and Management Information Systems.
OBJECTIVES
The
objectives of the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Programme are:
(i) To equip candidates with managerial skills and introduce them
to modern quantitative techniques in management.
(ii)
To prepare candidates for higher degree studies in management and
related areas.
(iii)
To develop candidates? ability to make appropriate and better decisions
as managers.
(iv)
To produce high level manpower necessary for effective management
of organisations in the public and private sectors.
MODALITY OF POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME (DM)
(i)
The DM programme would be run on full time and part-time basis to
meet the needs of the working executives in the public and private
sectors. The two programmes will have the same course content and
the students will take the same examinations and earn the same DM
degree of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.
(ii)
The mode of study includes course work, seminar and research project.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
(i)
Holders of first degrees in any field with at least second class honours
from approved Universities.
(ii)
Holders of HND with at least lower credit and one year post-qualification
experience.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The
Programme offers a lot of employment opportunities for the candidates
both in the public and private sectors. Candidates can also set up
their own businesses and become employers of labour.
DURATION:
(i)
For the full time DM Programme, the duration is one academic year.
(ii)
For the part-time DM programme, the duration will consist of 15 months
intensive academic works during the weekends.
AVAILABILITY OF STUDENTS FOR THE PROGRAMME
The
candidates for the programme are available within the Country. The
demand is perfectly inelastic especially among those who work to make
a career in Management.
RESOURCES AND FACILITIES
The
DM Programme is interdisciplinary in nature. Therefore, the Department
of Management Technology will make use of lecturers in other Departments
viz: Information Technology, Statistics/Operations Research and Maths/Computer
Science. However, more senior academic staff in Accountancy, Management
and Economics should be recruited for the Department.

601: PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
The nature and concept of management, various schools of thought on
the principles and practice of management and the systems approach
to management theory. The external environment - economics, political,
legal, technology, socio-cultural, ethical, financial and physical.
Management functions of planning, organising, staffing leading and
directing, controlling, decision making etc. The nature of organisation
and organisational structure. Power and authority, sources of power.
Delegation: Principles, advantages and problems. Leadership and leadership
styles.

602: PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
This course is designed to cover production functions of manufacturing,
service and governmental organisations. Production systems, production
control, materials handling, value analysis product design and selection,
linear programming, transportation model, network planning models,
process planning, job design and work methods. Plant location and
plant layout.

603: FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
Introduction to finance, goals and functions o f finance. Capital
budgeting decisions, investment appraisal tehniques and evaluation
of risks. Current assets management - cash, marketable securities,
inventory and accounts receivable. Sources of funds and investment
of funds - short term, intermediate and long-term financing. Capital
structure, dividend policy, partfolio theory and analysis. Financial
and forecasting.
DM 604: MARKETING MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
This course covers marketing concepts, functions, activities and planning.
Market segmentation, marketing environment - environmental factors
influencing marketing management process. New product development
and management - product development process, product line and product
mix, product life cycle concepts, branding and packaging. Channels
of distribution, physical distribution, inventory management, ware
housing. Consumer behaviour, promotion planning promotion mix and
pricing decisions. Sales management, service management, marketing
strategy and forecasting of marketing results. Case studies.

605: COST AND MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING (2 UNIT)
Introduction to cost accounting, cost terms, concepts and classification.
Materials, labour and overhead costs. Store records for inventory,
inventory valuation methods. Job order costing, process costing, standard
costing, cost-volume profit decisions and shut-down decisions. Relevant
costs for decision making, decision making under uncertainty, decision
free. Objectives and methods of management accounting. Budgetary control,
cash budgets, flexible budgets, budgeting and control techniques.
Pricing decisions, variance analysis, marginal versus absorption costing
and its effects on profitability.

606: FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING (2 UNITS)
fundamental accounting concepts, principles and standards. Accounting
conventions, books of accounts, trial balance, double entry book keeping,
principle books single - entry, documents used in commercial transactions.
Depreciation procedures, fixed assets accounting, income and financial
reporting of non-profit making organisations, manufacturing accounts,
partnership accounts and company accounts. Dissolution and liquidation,
provisions for bad or doubtful debts. Company published and unpublished
profit and loss account, balance sheet position, sources and application
of funds. Accounting standards, branch accounting, inventory accounting
and ratio analysis.

607: QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES (2 UNITS)
Measures of central tendency - mean and mode. Measures of dispersion
- standard deviation and coefficient of variation. Probability. Sampling,
correlation analysis, regression analysis time series analysis, break
even analysis, cost, revenue and profit analysis. Linear programming,
decision theory, inventory control, Critical Path Analysis (CPA),
network analysis, replacement theory, simulations, sensitivity analysis,
matrices, set theory calculus and markov chain, numerical analysis.

608: MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS (2 UNITS)
This course covers the relevance of the basic economic theory in management
decision making. The topics include: demand and supply analysis, nature
and scope of managerial economics, elasticity theory of costs and
production. Investment decisions, price output decisions, market structures,
pricing policies and international trade.

Consumer behaviour and utility theory. Theory of the firm - perfect
competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition (oligopoly). Theory
of costs and theory of production. National Income Accounting, measurement
and problems. Money, inflation, unemployment, international trade
and balance of payment.

Meaning, components and process of strategic management. Strategy
formulation and implementation, industry and competitive analysis.
Generic business strategies and industry environment. Practising strategic
analysis.

611: MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS (2 UNITS)
introduction to computers and application. Introduction to BASICS,
FORTRAN & COBOL. Concepts of data base management systems, management
aspects of information and different types of software packages. Design
of management information system, system designs and system analysis,
the filling system, back-up facilities and controls. Administration
and evaluation of management information systems. Computer reports
and services. Internet components, coverage and uses.

612: MANAGERIAL COMMUNICATION (2 UNITS)
Concepts and theories of communication, application of communication
to management, communication and organisational structure, barriers
to effective communication, person - to person communication, communicating
in groups, managing organisational communication.

613: BUSINESS LAW (2 UNITS).
This covers law of contract, Agency law, law of tort, company law
and partnership law hire purchase, sales of goods, banking law including
bankruptcy law (failed bank decree). Insurance law and practice, competition,
commercial securities and negotiable instruments. Administrative tribunals
and arbitration. Executorship and trusteeship law, surety and guarantees
will be discussed in details.

614: TAX MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING (2 UNITS).
Meaning of taxation and different types of taxes. Tax administration
and the tax authority relationship. Principles of tax planning, change
accounting data and ceasation. Taxation of sale proprietorship, partnership
and limited liability companies. Personnel income tax, value added
tax (VAT). Capital allowance, capital gains tax, petroleum profit

615: RESEARCH METHODS (2 UNITS).
Definition of research, its characteristics and classification. Identtification
of research problems and statement of the problem. Selection of a
research topic. Literature review, sources and purpose. Hypothesis
formulation and testing. Sources of data, methods of data collection,
population and sampling techniques,. Research proposal format. Analysis
of data and interpretation. Referencing. Students will be encouraged
to carry out research project using quantitative techniques for data
analysis.

616: AUDITING AND INVESTIGATION (2 UNITS).
The objectives, roles and scope of auditing. The duties, rights, responsibilities
and liability of an auditor (Internal and External Auditors). Auditing
guidelines and statement, audit management. Internal audit control
and the auditor. Applied verification, audit of companies and bank
reports. Specialised audit - banks, local government areas, institutions,
hotels and hospitals etc. Audit Committee. Investigation: definition,
objectives, nature, scope, types and methodology. Professional ethics
and problems encountered with auditing of computerised systems.

The nature, scope and objectives of corporate finance. Sources of
financing. Capital budgeting techniques and asset replacement. Gearing
and capital structure decisions and capital rationing. Ratio analysis,
inflation and taxation adjustment. Profit planning, portfolio theory,
principles of investment, decisions and management. Working capital
management, foreign exchange management. Merger and acquisition. Environment
and its impact, cost of capital and valuation, dividend policy and
stock valuation.

618: MANAGEMENT OF FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS (2 UNITS).
This course will examine the financial management of major financial
institutions viz: commercial banks, merchant banks, insurance comapnies,
mortgage finance institutions and other financial intermediaries.
Other topics include: corporate planning and control in financial
institutions, competition for customers and funds, investment portfolio
analysis and CREDT analysis. Asset and liability management, problems
of capital management, marketing of financial services, performance
measurement and reconciliation of profit objectives. Guidelines of
regulatory authority. Case studies.

619: PUBLIC SECTOR ACCOUNTING (2 UNITS).
Introduction to public sector accounting system, theory and practice.
The structure of governmental accounting in Nigeria and the treasury.
Government funds and sources of revenue. Types of government expenditure
and relevant authorities payment procedures. Cash office duties, vote
books, advances and subsidiary accounts. Store accounting, annual
statement of accounts. Accountings of local government areas and finance,
health and educational institutions? accounts and finance. Budgeting
systems and process. Financial planning, management and control in
the public sector.

Meaning of finance, objectives and scope of financial management.
Sources of finance: short - term, intermediate and long-term. Capital
budgeting techniques, cost of capital, capital structure decisions.
Profit planning, leasing, dividend policy, maturity structure of debt,
debt management, share valuation, alternative financing instruments
and strategies. Working capital management and foreign exchange management.

Money, its nature, significance and functions. The nature and scope
of monetary and financial system. The commercial banking process, principles,
problems and policies of central banking. Instruments of payment in

622: INDUSTRIAL AND LABOUR RELATIONS (2 UNITS)
The
meaning and elements of industrial relations, collective bargaining,
laws and decrees affecting the conduct of collective bargaining in
Nigeria. Grievance resolution procedures. Union interests versus management
prerogative. Internal and external procedures for trade disputes
settlement.
Theories of strikes, wage determination, the role of Employers Association
in industrial relations. Administration and enforcement of the collective
bargaining agreement.
DM 623: INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
The concepts of project and investment, features of investment, classification
of investment, probability theories of investment, risk in investment,
investment activities in Nigeria. Evaluation of investment proposal,
valuation of stocks and bonds, risk analysis and investment management.
Resource allocation in organisation. Capital budgeting techniques.
Corporate profitability, portfolio selection and management concepts,
acquisition analysis and strategies.

624: ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR (2 UNITS).
Nature and concepts of organisational behaviour. The organisation
as a system. The organisation structures and impact. Motivational
theories, power and authority in organisations. Types of organisational
conflicts, causes and strategies for conflict management.
Interpersonal
and inter-group behaviour dynamics. Perceptions and job satisfaction.
