FUTY GETS NEW VICE CHANCELLOR

Professor B.H. Usman has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University0 of Technology, Yola (FUTY). Until his appointment, Professor B.H. Usman was the past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice Chancellor, FUTY.

He has a B.Sc. in Agriculture (Soil Science) with a second class honours, upper division degree, from the University of Maiduguri. M.Sc. in Soil Chemistry, University of Reading, England, U.K. and Ph.D in Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Management from the University of London, Wye College, England, U.K.

He now becomes the 6th Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.     More>>

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The postgraduate program in the department of Geography is designed to provide skilled and adequate manpower in planning and management of man’s environment and resources.  The problem of resources for the growing world for which the geographers must apply their skills is the basis for offering postgraduate programmes in applied geography.  Fundamental to this problem is the geographical methods of studying the inter-relationship between the physical environment, the economy, the nature of society within the context of changing situations at all levels of scale from the most local to world wide.

The purpose of the program is to produce a breed of graduates who will be concerned with man’s evaluation, exploitation and management of human and natural resources, imbued with a clear understanding of the relevant physical, behavioural and information systems, through which man can optimize his use of these resources.  This programmes is developed at a time when the pressure on Nigerian resources is increasing thus demanding a more rational and foresighted approach to resource management and allocation.

SCOPE OF PROGRAMME

The Postgraduate programmes in the Department of Geography consist of course work and research thesis/project. Fieldwork forms an integral part of the programmes.

The program courses are in the following areas:

 i)                M.Sc Environmental Resources Management (ERM)

ii)                  M.Sc Rural Development (RD)

iii)           M.Sc Geography with options in Climatology, Population, Geomorphology &  Transportation

iv)                Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Environmental Management

Duration of the Programme

The minimum duration of each course is twelve months and the maximum is twenty four months, staring from October of each academic year.  The programmes are full-time and based on course work and a project report.  Seminars, field and studio/laboratory courses, form and integral part of the program.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

M.Sc Environmental Resources Management

Candidates must posses at least a good Second Class Honours degree in Geography, or closely related disciplines in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Agriculture or Engineering from recognized Universities. 

M.Sc Rural Development

Candidates must posses at least a good second class Honours Degree in Geography, or closely related disciplines in Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, Engineering, Social Sciences and Management Sciences from recognized Universities.

M.Sc Geography

Candidates must posses at least a good Second Class Honours Degree in Geography, or closely related disciplines in Environmental Sciences from recognized Universities. 

PGD Environmental Management

Candidates must posses at least possess a degree in Geography, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, Engineering, Social and Management Sciences from recognized Universities. Holders of Higher National Diploma in any of the above fields with minimum of lower credit level may also be eligible for admission.

Job and Career Prospects.

The shortage of well educated and informed personnel in environmental resources management and rural development planning often results in serious planning lapses in a country’s drive to develop.  Therefore the products of these programmes are intended to fill a critical and growing area of manpower need at the present stage of the country’s development.  Job prospects abounds in the following areas for the graduates: Ministry of Environment, Departments of Natural resources, Community Development, Lands and survey at the state and local government levels, Urban and regional planning agencies, Agricultural development agencies, River Basin authorities, etc.

Course Description

GY 601: Introduction to The Environment (2 Units)

Broad definition of the environment; the components of the environment; land, water, air, forest and animal; interrelationships between environmental System Approach to the study of environment components; man and the environment; urban and rural environments.

GY 602:  Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) (2 Units)

Origin and development of EIA; nature and purpose of EIA; EIA process; methodology of EIA; application of EIA; major limitations of EIA.

GY 603:  Environment and Development (2 Units)

The concept of sustainable development; population and resource utilization; basic human needs; topical issues in environmental management and development: agriculture, energy, industry and urban systems.

GY 604:  Environmental Law and Polices (2 Units)

Development of Environmental law; environmental legislation, regulating individual component parts of the environment in Nigeria; Acts on environmental protection; general principles of environmental law; enforcement of environmental laws in Nigeria. Environmental Policies in Nigeria.

GY 605:  Environmental Problems (2 Units)

Environmental problems at global and local levels: air, water and land; Processes of environmental modification; natural and human induced environmental problems; environmental problems in rural areas: over-cultivation, overgrazing, deforestation and floods; hazard perception and risk analysis; strategies of mitigating environmental problems.

GY 606 – Environmental Hazards and Disaster Management (2 Units)

Concept of disaster/hazards.  Hazards/disaster management programmes and policies.   Local and traditional response.  Government responses at local, state and local levels.  Multinational corporate response. Role of Non-Government Organizations in disaster management.

GY 607:  Research Methods and Field work (2 Units)

Procedures of generating environmental data: primary and secondary data; Quantification of environmental information; Techniques of field investigations in environmental management.  Field works in environmental issues. 

GY 608: Community Participation in Environmental Management (2 Units)

Concepts of participation; rationale for public and private participation; objectives of public and private participation; identification; identification of various communities modes and techniques of public and private participation; constraints to participation in environmental management.

GY 609: Quantitative Techniques and Computer Application (2 Units)

Application of statistical techniques in the analysis of environmental data: descriptive and inferential statistics; spatial and temporal analysis of environmental issues. Computer applications in Environmental management.

Definition and objectives of remote sensing. Data acquisition. Image processing. Application of remote sensing to environmental management. Concept and components of GIS. Data input, verification storage and output. Applications of GIS to environmental management.

GY 611: Land Use and Soil Conservation (2 Units)

Land use types and problems.  Land degradation types and causes.  Topographic, social and economic consequences of land degradation.   Soil conservation theory, techniques and national policy.  The need for soil conservation, illustrating with Nigerian examples. Practice of soil conservation management.

GY 612:  Climate Change and Environment (2 Units)

Composition and function of the atmosphere.  Atmospheric monitoring and observation.  Climate and Human activities. Climate Change:  Definition, evidences, causes and effects on the environment.  Environmental Management implications of climate change.  Global strategies and the role of organizations e.g. WMO, UNEP, IPCC etc.

Concepts of eco-tourism; the tourist industry; nature conservation and tourism; parks development and management; tourist resource management; eco-tourism development in Nigeria.

GY 614:  Agriculture and Environment (2 Units)

Types and nature of agricultural production.  Environmental problems arising from agricultural production.   Impact assessment of externalities in agriculture.  Strategies and policies for sustainable agricultural production.

GY 615: Water Resources  Management (2 Units)

Water needs and sources; Techniques of monitoring and data acquisition for water resources; Water budget; Water quality assessment; River basin development; Water resource conservation and management.

GY 616:  Public/Community Health Management (2 Units)

Human health and environmental quality; health Standards, standards for drinking water quality, environmental health standards.

GY 697: Project I  (2 Units)

Preparation and Presentation of research proposal at staff /PG seminar

GY 698:   Project II  (6 Units)

The project report is based on an individual research carried out by the student on an approved topic and supervised by a teaching staff in the programme.  The student is expected to show his ability and demonstrate the range of knowledge he acquired in the taught courses.
