POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AND EXTENSION
Courses The programme aims at improving the knowledge of the candidate in the field of agricultural economics and agricultural extension slightly above what is tenable at the first-degree level and to sharpen the analytical ability of candidates so that they would be able to pursue a higher degree in agricultural economics and agricultural extension. This will enable them apply economic principles in solving agricultural problems and to communicate modern production technologies effectively to the rural populace. The programme shall comply with regulations governing Higher Diplomas of the University. The Department will offer programme for the Award of Postgraduate Diplomas in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension. Duration of the Programme
The
full-time programme shall last a minimum of 2 semesters or 12 months and
a maximum of 4 semesters or 24 months. While the part-time programme
shall last for a minimum of 4 semesters or 24 months and a maximum of 8
semesters or 48 months. Nature of the Programme
The
programme shall be by course-work and research. The candidate will be
required to meet a minimum requirement of 18-credit units course work
plus 6 units of project before graduation. The candidate will be
required to submit a project report, which shall be defended before a
panel of both internal and external examiners ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Holders of first degree in Agriculture of FUTY or any other recognized university with a class of degree lower than the entry requirement for M.Sc. (i.e. Third class or a Pass degree), and holders of HND Upper Credit in agriculture might be admitted Job and Career Prospects Products of the programme can take up professional careers in research, teaching, management, extension and other occupations, requiring the capabilities of an intermediate applied economist. Graduands would be suitable for both private and public agricultural and related establishments like Ministries, Farms, Agricultural Development Projects, Banks, Community Development Projects, Research Institutes, Universities, the non-governmental organisations etc.

Basics of consumption function, investment theories. Demand for money,; supply for money. Basics of international trade; balance of payment; national budget; national income accounting. Trade cycle theories – economic growth.
AE603 Economics of Agricultural Production
(2 Units)
Economic principles of agricultural production; marginal analysis; equimarginal analysis; enterprise combination; theory of comparative advantage. Production principles applied to labour and capital; measure of efficiency in resource use in agriculture. Elementary analytical tools in agricultural production. Linear programming, non-linear programming, inventory theory, computer analysis.
AE 604 Introduction to Quantitative Analysis (2 Units)
Review of mathematical concepts; application of the following mathematical techniques to economic analysis: calculus of variation, integration, linear algebra, classical optimization, games theory, inventory models, transportation model, the Markov chain processes.
AE 605 Statistical and Research Methodology in Agriculture (2 Units)
Scientific methods and their application in social research; problem of definition, hypothesis stating. Collection and analysis of data; data presentation. Elementary analysis of statistical data; measure of central tendency and variation. Hypothesis testing, correlation analysis and regression.

Farm Management and Accounting (2 Units)
Classification of agricultural resources. Principles and practice of farm organisation. Organisation of resources and enterprises, resource combination and control. Farm business analysis. Principles of farm records keeping, preparation of financial statement, types of farm records and analysis. Decision making process. Farm management information and analysis. Farm budgeting and computer as a tool in farm management.
AE 607 Agricultural Marketing (2 Units)
Nature of marketing; marketing functions, conduct, channels and process. Types of marketing institutions and their suitability to developing countries. Government policy towards agricultural marketing. Agricultural marketing in agricultural development. International trade in agricultural products.
AE 609 Agricultural Finance (2 Units)
The role of credit in agricultural development. Problems of financing agricultural development. Determinants of savings and investment in agriculture, financial implications of different types of farm business firms. Types and sources of credit. Financial requirement for a farmer. Credit delivery systems.
AE 610 Agricultural Development Planning and Policy (2 Units)
Theories and models of agricultural development. Objectives and scope of agricultural planning. Dimensions of agricultural planning. Agricultural planning process. A critical analysis of past agricultural planning efforts in Nigeria.
AE 611 Agricultural Project Analysis (2 Units)
Project in overall development. Types of projects. Steps in the conceptualization of a project; planning, implementation and evaluation. Criteria for selecting a project: cost-benefit analysis, IRR, Sensitivity analysis etc.
AE 612 Agricultural Cooperatives (2 Units)
Role of civil society in development. Nature and characteristics of cooperatives. Establishment of agricultural cooperatives among farmers. Types of agricultural cooperatives; structures and management of cooperatives. Financing cooperatives in developing countries. Problems and prospects of agricultural cooperation in Nigeria.
AE 614 Intermediate Econometrics (2 Units)
Specification, estimation and interpretation of economic models and application to empirical problems. Review and extension of single-equation regression models, properties of least-squares estimators under alternative specification. Errors in variables, autoregressive and heteroscedastic models.
Introduction to general sociological theory, analysis of rural social systems and the relation of the individual to his social environment with reference to group processes, interaction, social structure and attitudes.
Principles and concepts of programme planning and evaluation in Agricultural Extension. Steps in programme development; determination of needs, definition of problems in extension, development of a plan, obtaining staff and clientele commitment to action, programme implementation and appraisal.
Principles and concepts of extension. Medium of extension, media, demonstration etc. Examination of various extension systems.
Types and nature of resources in agricultural production. Externalities in agriculture. Impact assessment of externalities in agriculture. Rural population and land use. Land reform policy, settlement schemes and rural planning strategy for sustainable production in agriculture.
AE655 Rural Leadership and Development (2 Units)
The role of rural and agricultural development in national development in developing countries. Leadership role in rural development. Identification and development of rural leadership. Strategies and models for rural development. An analysis of a specific rural development programme in Nigeria.
AE 656 Introduction to Agrarian Systems and Social Movement (2 Units)
Comparative examination of the nature and structure of different agrarian systems in terms of land tenure patterns, social structure, production organisation and population composition.
AE 657 Introduction to Rural Development Theory (2 Units)
Sociological study of the role of rural and agricultural development in
the national development of the third world countries. Strategies and
models of rural development will be examined with special emphasis
placed on the processes of social, economic and political integration of
rural areas into the organisational life of national society.
AE 658 Technological Change in Rural Societies (2 Units)
Theories and processes of diffusion of innovations; the concept of appropriate technology, its development and pre-conditions.
AE 659 Women In Agriculture (2 Units)
The role of women in rural and national economy. Access of rural women to agricultural production inputs. Access of women to agricultural support services (e.g. credit, extension etc.). How to improve the productivity of women in an economy. Categories of women and their role in development. Special role of women in rural development.
AE 697 Project I (Seminar) 2 Units
Candidates will be required to present a Seminar paper under the supervision of the assigned supervisor on any topic as may be approved by the Department.
AE 698 Project II 4 Units
Candidates will be required to present a report on a field research Project under the supervision of an assigned supervisor. The final output of the research shall be defended before a panel.
