POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN CHEMISTRY
Staff INTRODUCTION The graduate programme in Chemistry offers M. Tech and Ph.D programmes on areas such as Physical, Analytical, Industrial and Polymer Chemistry. Also, a program leading to a diploma in Chemistry is designed to provide graduates with a qualification in an area of specialisation other than that of their first degree and also prepare graduates with a pass degree or HND holders at an appropriate level for admission to higher degrees. The department brings together qualified experts in a range of chemical disciplines with an established reputation for excellence in teaching and research training. The department occupies a modern building, which is a short walk to the main University library and houses high quality laboratory facilities and state-of-the-art research equipment to support these programmes. Both fundamental research in the traditional disciplines of Chemistry and research of more immediate interest to industry are undertaken in the department. Further, there is also a great deal of interdisciplinary research within the department as well as collaborative research with other departments within the University. Collaboration with other Nigerian Universities, government establishments and industry also features in this programme.
back to top (a) The programmes are designed to provide a broad based knowledge of industrial processes, process economics and materials in order to train chemists for industry, research and development. It is intended to foster professionalism in the theory and practice of chemistry within the framework of the objectives set for universities of technology. (b) To give basic training in instrumental methods of analysis and familiarise the students with current and likely future practices in industry. The student will be encouraged to critically appraise the advantages and limitations of individual analytical techniques to ensure that the most appropriate procedure is selected when tackling new problems in industrial analysis. STRUCTURE OF M.TECH DEGREE PROGRAMME There are two Master of Technology (M.Tech) Degrees programme offered by the department. Use the link below to view Analytical Chemistry Industrial Chemistry (a) The M.Tech. programme is an advanced course generally comprising of a combination course work and research project leading to the submission of a dissertation in analytical and industrial chemistry. Prospective students are encouraged to discuss research with staff members in the areas of interest so that they may choose a research project which is of potential interest to staff member(s). The research project can be selected from a wide range of topics in all spectrum of chemistry. (b) All prospective students must register for and take courses totaling not less than 24 units at the 700 level, excluding maximum units of recommended undergraduate courses that my be prescribed by the department. (c) For the award of M. Tech. Degree students must be examined by written examination on course work and oral examination on the research study. The dissertation shall be classified as accepted, to be modified and represented or rejected. (d) Eligibility (i) Possession of B.Sc/B.Tech (Hons) degree with first or second class (upper) degree in chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Geochemistry, Soil Science, Environmental Science, and other related disciplines. (ii) An acceptable postgraduate diploma in a field which is deemed appropriate, for the postgraduate course in chemistry in addition to a first degree or HND in chemistry may also be considered. (e) Course Duration A full-time M.Tech. course shall run for a minimum of 12 months consisting of two semesters of formal lectures and at least 6 months of original research investigations.
