FUTY GETS NEW VICE CHANCELLOR

Professor B.H. Usman has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University0 of Technology, Yola (FUTY). Until his appointment, Professor B.H. Usman was the past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice Chancellor, FUTY.

He has a B.Sc. in Agriculture (Soil Science) with a second class honours, upper division degree, from the University of Maiduguri. M.Sc. in Soil Chemistry, University of Reading, England, U.K. and Ph.D in Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Management from the University of London, Wye College, England, U.K.

He now becomes the 6th Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.     More>>

M. ED GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION PROGRAMME

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The M.Ed. Degree in geography Education is designed to cater for geography education. It is intended to draw participants from the secondary schools and other higher institutions of learning Ministry based supervisors of geography education will equally benefit from the programme.

SCOPE OF PROGRAMME

The Geography Education programme offers M. Ed Degree with course work in geography education. Students shall be exposed to core courses in education and geography for two semesters, present a school's seminar and finally write a matter dissertation. This will be done in the student's area of interest in education. The student will carry out a research project in his area of interest.

Duration:- A contained in the Federal University of Technology, Yola, Postgraduate study brochure.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

As contained in the Federal University of Technology Yola, Post-Graduate study brochure. Applications should posses any of the following degree in geography education with good honours classification from recognised universities

(i) B.Sc./B.A(Ed)   (ii) B.Ed.   (iii) B.Sc.(Hons)   (iv) B.A. (Hons)

Applications with B.Sc./B.SC./B.A. (HONS) degree should posses in addition a Postgraduate Diploma or certificate in Education; OR should have taught their subjects of specially for at least 3 years. They will be expected to audit some lower level courses in education.

JOB AND CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates of this programme could function as supervisors and inspectors of schools at national, state and local Education levels. They could as well teach geography in secondary and tertiary school levels, or remain as geography lecturers at Colleges of Education and Universities.

GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES

SE701 EVALUATION AND TESTING IN SCIENCE EDUCATION (2 Units)

Constructions of Test items and a complete test. Table of specifications. Philosophy, Purpose and values of classroom tests. Standarized test: Construction. Item analysis. Standarized versus Teacher - made tests. Kinds of achievement tests. Scoring of achievement tests. Awards of grades to scores (Procedures). Use of performance Objectives in test Construction. Domains of educational Objectives: Cognitive, Psychomoter and Affective. Taxonomy of educational objectives and test construction. Aims, goals and Objectives of education. Preparation of behaviour or specific objectives. Types of Evaluation and Testing.

SE702 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL IN THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE (3 Units)

A course designed for the study and development of teaching for the science or mathematics teacher. Particular emphasis will be placed on the materials associated with the new curriculum projects in science or mathematics. Opportunity will be provided for the design and construction of suitable demonstration and laboratory aids. Commercial science or mathematics teaching aids will be demonstrated, studied, and evaluated.

SE703 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN SCIENCE EDUCATION (2 Units)

The significance of sampling in research. Data collection techniques:
Primary and secondary sources; use of observation, document, interviews, questionnaires, scaling methods; psychological tests. Writing a research report, incorporating appropriate tests statistics.

SE704 ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION OF SCIENCE EDUCATION (2 Units)

The course is designed to prepare students to function as an administrator and supervisor of Science Programmes or activities in schools, Colleges and other agencies of science education. Strength top echelon science personnel. Sparking science education team for effectiveness. Hiring and Directing Science Teachers. Acquiring and maintaining science funds and Hardware. Evaluation of science programmes and other activities like science fairs. Students guidance and counselling. Finding solution for operation problems in sacience. Education law and its Relationships to science Education Science staff and professional disputes. Staff evaluation and improvement Techniques. Professional Science

SE705 ADVANCED EDUCATIONAL STATISTICE (2 UNITS)

The need for statistics. Distribution of scores in a continuous series. Tally and frequency Table. Graphical Representation of frequency distribution. The normal probability curve (or Normal Distribution curve). Measures of central Tendency: The Mole. The Medium. Non-parametric Tests: The chi-square test, spearmen's Rank order correlation etc. Their application in research report writing.

SE715 PROBLEMS IN THE TEACHING OF GEOGRAPHY (2 UNITS)

This course can be taken by those specializing in Primary or secondary or college Geography teaching . Teaching will be tailored according to needs. The teaching of selected topics to fit needs of Primary, Secondary School and College classes. Problems of methodology in Geography teaching : Teaching methods, evaluate teaching aids and their improvisation. Relevant areas in geography should be used to illustrate teaching methods and the use of teaching aids. Problem of the slow learners geography. The teaching of mixed classes: Problem and solution

SE796 SEMINAR IN SCIENCE EDUCATION (2 UNITS)

The course gives the Postgraduate student an opportunity to discuss current research in Science or Mathematics Education, to report on some topics of interest treated in recent literature, to discus topical national and International issues in Science or Mathematics Education, to discuss his own research problem and to profit by the reports of others in the groups. The research problems, quality And area explored are part of the functions this course is to serve. Some time will be devoted to acquainting the student with library resources available, and review the format used in preparation o0f research report. Science or mathematics teachers at all levels may explore research to help determine a problem for their own work and/or to familiar with research that has been done.

SE798 RESEARCH PROJECT (4 UNITS)

This will start at the end of the course that is, at the end of the first two semesters. Students will be free to choose their own problems to be investigated. They are expected to be acquainted with major research in their problem areas.
Advice will be given as and when necessary by the Supervisor.
