FUTY GETS NEW VICE CHANCELLOR

Professor B.H. Usman has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University0 of Technology, Yola (FUTY). Until his appointment, Professor B.H. Usman was the past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice Chancellor, FUTY.

He has a B.Sc. in Agriculture (Soil Science) with a second class honours, upper division degree, from the University of Maiduguri. M.Sc. in Soil Chemistry, University of Reading, England, U.K. and Ph.D in Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Management from the University of London, Wye College, England, U.K.

He now becomes the 6th Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.     More>>

M.ED PROGRAMME IN EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The national policy on education recognises and emphasizes the training of educational managers/administrators for the proper implementation of educational programs in the country. The M. Ed programme in Educational management is aimed at preparing both potential and practicing personnel for responsible instructional management and administrative position in educational institutions, ministries, Boards of education, research centres and governmental organisations. The programme embrace both theoretical and practical components and that would lead to a whelistic training of a professional in educational management. Graduates of the programme would equally be expected to have developed competent skills in research activities into educational.

SCOPE OF PROGRAMME

The M.Ed Degree in Educational management shall involve course work, practicum and seminar and research shall include schools supervision, financial management, schools discipline, Cost – Benefit Analysis, Educational policy Analysis and Reviews, Population and educational planning and other relevant educational problems.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME
The duration for M.Ed. Educational Management will be as follows;
Minimum of 12 Calendar Months) full Time
Maximum of 24 Calender Months) students
Minimum of 24 Calender Months) Part Time
Maximum of 36 Calender Months) student

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
This is as contained in the Federal University of Technology, Yola (FUTY) Postgraduate study Brochure. In addition to the general University requirement, applications must be holders of a B.Sc. (Ed)/B.A. (Ed)/B.A./B.Sc/B.Tech.(Ed)/B.Tech. degree from a recongnised University with a minimum of second class lower division, or its equivalent. Applications with B.Sc./B.A/B.Tech. Honours degree should posses in addition a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

JOB AND CAREER PROSPECTS
Graduates of the programme can comfortably take up appointments as education managers at all levels of education (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary level, They could equally serve in schools management Boards (Primary or Secondary, They could be creators of jobs through the establishment of their private schools. They could be teachers/Lecturers in Colleges of Education, Universities or the Polytechnics, and could as well work in research institutes.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

EM 701 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
Introduction to concepts and methods used for quantitative and qualitative investigation in education. It includes a detailed analysis of each of the research processes, problems statement and hypotheses; review of literature; methodology and design; analysis and Interpretation of data; and discussions. Summary and conclusions, Basics approach to research including Historical, survey, description, and experimental; and reporting research results.

EM 702 ADVANCED ECONOMICS OF EDUCATION (2 UNIT)
Educational viewed as consumption and investment. The economics of manpower planning and Educational procedure in integrating manpower planning into educational planning. Approaches in assessing the economic contribution of Education (emphasis will be laid on co
st/benefit analysis). The influences of economics of education on educational policy – making in Nigeria.

EM 703 FUNDAMENTAL THEORIES OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS) Theorie as that basis of educational management; Importance and uses of such Theories in Education; A cursory look at the various organisational theories; Elements and characteristics of organisations; Concepts of organisational and administration; school and classroom organisation; Discipline; Interpersonal relations; School-community relations; Organisational role; relationships among formalization and Decentralization in Organisation; power conflict, leadership and communication in organisations.

EM 704 ADVANCED POLITICS OF EDUCATION (2 UNITS)
Political issues in education, politics of education at Federal, State and Local Government levels, Socio-economic, political and financial environment of educational decision making. The political role of pressure groups in education. Elite recruitment, socialization and incorporation.

EM 705 OUANTITATIVE METHODS IN EDUCATIONAL PLANNING (2 UNITS)   

The importance of planning to educational administration. What is planning Techniques, for example use of the planning programming and Budgeting systems (PPBS) Programme evaluation and Review Technique (P.E.R.T.), Zero Base Budgeting (Z.B.B.) and the Delphi Technique in planning. Forecasting and projections feasibility tasting and consideration of alternatives. Constraints to Educational planning in Nigeria.


EM 706 ADMINISTRATION OF SECONDARY AND HIGHER EDUCATION (2 UNITS) The changing context of secondary School Administration; Organisation and management theories in relation to secondary school administration; delegation and internal communication with the school system; duties and functions of the Ministry, Schools board Principal. Teachers, Students and Community in School management; contemporary problems and issues in secondary school administration. University Administration structures control of Schools and employees, budget-making and administration, financial accounting and reporting, codes of ethics, merit rating, confirmation of appointments, protection of University funds and public relations.

EM 707 SCHOOL MAPPING, PLANT PLANNING ADMINISTRATION (2 UNITS) Concept and application of school locational planning; Diagnostic indications like enrolment, teachers facilities, catchment area, etc; School plant planning with reference to design, sitting, building materials, ventilation, spare accommodation, utilization etc; Construction, equipping and maintaining school plant; school mapping studies in USSR. Sri Lanka, Morocco,
Uyanga, Iran, Nigeria, etc.

EM 708 LEGAL BASIS FOR EDUCATION (2 UNITS)

The legal basis for education; a critical analysis of the content and impact of the education laws of Nigeria from colonial times to the military regime; the 1979 constitution and implications for education. The teacher and law.

EM 709 ADVANCED EDUCATIONAL FOUNDAATION (2 UNITS)
This course is a balanced composite of Educational Foundations aspects namely; Education Psychology, Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education and History of Education. The basic elements of each will be covered.

EM 710 PRACTICUM/SEMINAR FOR EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
Attachment to Educational Organisations. ( University, Polytechnic, College of Education, Ministry of Education Schools etc.) for practical training. This course is intended to give students practical training in the art of problem solving in education. Emphasis will be focussed or a detailed discussion of various administrative and organisational theories in relations to education in order to give students the theoretical base. Techniques of writing and analysis cases, and the school practice in case writing. Students will be expected to present and analysis hypothetical cases based on the various aspects of educational management. In addition, they will be attached to various education bodies where they will understudy, collect and analysis actual cases and present a seminar on their work.

EM 711 ADVANCED EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS. (2 UNITS)
Descriptive statistics and application to research. Tasting research hypothesis. Statistical test of significance parametric tests, tests, analysis of variance and covariance (one-way and two-way). Non-parametric statistics example CL; I-square test, kolmogorov-Smirnov test, sign, Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Ran ked-signs test;, Cochran Q test, Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis test, Statistics and education decisions. Computer and analysis of educational research data.

EM 712 EDUCATIONAL PLANNING AND POLICY ANALYSIS (2 UNITS)
Element of Planning, type of Planning Approaches to Educational planning in Nigeria-achievements, weakness and approaches used; Relationship between educational planning and economic planning; Educational Policy-making process; Role of Policy-makers, administrators in policy formulation and implementation: A statistical analysis of policy documents and recommendation in Nigerian Education.

EM 713 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF CURRICULUM PLANNING (2 UNITS)
The principles of curriculum design; Basic Curriculum questions; contemporary methods of curriculum development; The national policy and the new curriculum, planning and implementing curriculum within the school system, problems of curriculum development in Nigeria.

EM 715 MANAGERIAL PSYCHOLOGY (2 UNITS)
Understanding human behaviour in complex organisations, Human behaviour organisational changes; staff counselling in education; Job satisfaction and workers morals; Management and human motivation; Theories of attitude change; personality theories and leadership behaviour; Rrustration, stress and conflict in organizations.

EM 717 POPULATION STUDIES FOR EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT (2 UNITS)
Methods of collecting demographic data. Statistic population; Population structure by age and sex geographical distribution of the population and location of educational institutions; tackling the educational problems of migrant populations; economically active and inactive population and the problems of forecasting manpower requirement.

EM 798 RESEARCH PROJECT (4 UNITS)
Student will identify a problem relevant to his area of specialisation and carry out an empirical study.
