The
general philosophy of the post graduate programmes at FUTY is enunciated
in the Regulations Governing Higher Degrees. This includes, amongst
others, providing post graduate training in selected disciplines with
the aim of solving some identified problems in order to enhance the
socio- economic and technological development of Nigeria. The M.A.
in English for Specific Purposes- ESP (Science, Media and Technology)
programme identifies very strongly with this philosophy as it is aimed
at providing manpower training in an area of intense national need.
Training in Linguistics and English Language in Nigerian Universities
has remained traditional, uninnovative and fossilized, not incorporating
within it advances in knowledge in the field. One of such advances
is the shift in emphasis from General English to the specific uses
to which language is put in various contexts and situations. Despite
this fact, our Universities continue to produce graduates in English
Language whose orientation is mainly in General English and Literature.
As a result, these graduates lack the ability to apply their training
to the ever increasing, challenging and Specific Purposes to which
English Language is used in various socio-cultural and occupational
contexts.
In line with the philosophy of post graduate training at FUTY, the
M.A programme in English for specific purposes (with emphasis on English
for Science, Media and Technology) aims at providing specialist language
training, the first of its kind in the country, for English language
practitioners wishing to function in these areas, mainly as instructors,
teachers, lecturers or Language Communicators. The programme emphasizes
theoretical training in linguistics as well as practical application
of such theories to language use in various fields of Science, Media
and Technology.
