The idea of
establishing FUTY Centre for Distance Learning dates back to the
era of the immediate past Vice Chancellor: Professor Salihu Mustafa,
when Senate at its 78th meeting held on Thursday 28th February and
Friday 1st March 2002 approved in principle the establishment of the
Centre for Distance Learning (CDL). The University Governing Council at
its 46th regular meeting held on Tuesday 30th July 2002 formally
approved the idea. Based on that, the FUTY Centre for Distance Learning
started operation with Dr Mala Galtima serving as the pioneer
Coordinator. The office secretariat of the Centre is located at Aliyu
Mai Borno Estate, Yola town. The wisdom of establishing the Centre came
in response to the federal government pronouncement on the need to
provide open and distant education to Nigerians, in view of the
insatiable quest for university education. In other word, the Centre was
established with the primary aim of increasing access to education at
all level to Nigerian, particularly those living within the University
(FUTY) catchments areas that may be interested in learning and acquiring
higher education to up-date their knowledge and skills.
In addition to the
above, the Centre has the following aims and objective:
i. To widen the
access to University education (Degree, Diploma & Certificates etc) to
all people, especially those that may not have the opportunity for some
reasons to acquire education through the conventional system of
education.
ii. To provide
opportunity for further University education to enhance the people’s
knowledge and professionalism in chosen areas of study.
iii. To promote life-long learning at all levels
of education.
iv. To strengthen the internal revenue drive of
the University
To actualize the above stated objectives, the
Centre in conjunction with the University Management went into
partnership with the Bureau for learning Development of University of
South Africa (UNISA) to organize and train the University (FUTY) Staff
on the techniques and skills of developing learning materials for
distance learning. The South African University (UNISA) successfully
organized and conducted such training from the 12th – 24th July 2003.
About ninety(90) lectures of the University ( FUTY) were trained by
UNISA on the task of disseminating distance learning education. Those
lecturers constitute the bulk of resource persons that developed the
learning materials presently used by the centre. To date the Federal
University of Technology Yola has been in constant contact with the
South African University (UNISA) and also the National Open University
of Nigeria (NOUN) and the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE)
on distance learning matters.
However, it wasn’t until during the tenure of the
present Vice Chancellor: Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu that the Centre
for Distance Learning took off fully by mounting first degree programmes
in Accounting, Business Management, Educational Management and Guidance
and Counselling on distance learning basis. Learning is conducted through
issuance of learning materials to students, no direct lectures to
students per say. Learning is limited to contact period (not more than
four times in a semester), after which the students are invited for
semester examinations. The learning materials are developed in
conformity with course units and curriculums from departments concerned
as approved by the senate of the University.
