UNIVERSITY SIWES UNITFunctions Staff Programme Assessment Course Code
The SIWES Unit was established as part of the requirements by the
National University Commission (NUC) and Industrial Training Fund (ITF)
for the accreditation of any Engineering, Technology and Applied
Sciences disciplines in any It also liaises between the NUC (the supervising agency) and the ITF (the funding agency) to ensure early and proper submission of students list and payment of both the students SIWES allowances and the Institutions supervision allowances accordingly. In addition, this University being the only University within the zone (Adamawa and Taraba zone) it also doubles as the headquarters of the SIWES Zonal Supervision Review Committee. This entails co-ordinating the SIWES supervision activities of all the other tertiary institution within this zone and to plan the logistics with the various institutions SIWES Co-ordinators.
SIWES COURSE PROGRAMMEAll Students in the Engineering, Technology and Applied Sciences disciplines shall be exposed to a period of Industrial Work Experience Scheme, normally referred to as S.I.W.E.S. The training shall take place at the end of the 200 – and 300 – levels for three months each and six months during the second semester of the 400 level of a normal degree programme.A total period of 12 calendar months on the whole is considered to be adequate. Students shall be exposed to a combination of field experiences both in the public and private sector and/or industry/business/administrative activities relevant to their individual discipline. The student is expected to submit a systematic logbook record, and a type written technical report for assessment at the end of each training period.SIWES COURSE ASSESSMENT The assessment shall be in segments namely: (a) Industry’s Supervisors report - 15% (b) Institutional Supervisors report - 15% (c) Assessment of Logbook report - 25% (d) Assessment of Technical report - 25% (e) Students defence/viva of report - 20% Total 100%
The
final grade for the 200 level and 300 level SIWES course shall be “Repeat”
or “Pass” and shall not be used for result computation.
However, the grade for the 400 level SIWES shall be computed
and used as any other academic course unit.
(Various departments are to liaise with the University SIWES
