Brief History of the Directorate

The Senate of the University at its 78th regular meeting held on 28th February and 1st March 2002 recommended a proposal from the Management to Council of the University for the establishment of the Directorate with the responsibility for sourcing research funds, allocation of research grant, retirement, monitoring and report submission as well as for application of research outcome, marketing, extension and publication. The directorate will promote research within the University and in collaboration with other partners. The Vice-Chancellor then appointed a Coordinator to head the Directorate in May, 2002. Thus, the Directorate is new and is trying to fully take-off.

Philosophy

The Directorate considers research as a means through which the complexity of nature is reduced to simple forms for easy understanding by making them intelligible to man and it is subordinate to economic and political objectives for building nations and societies. That research is not a mere display of astuteness but the means for generating mew bodies of knowledge which have application to the advancement of society and confer economic supremacy, and scientific advantage to the beneficiary. Therefore, research as a vehicle for progress should necessarily have development as its primary motive and for it to be valuable, it should create bodies of knowledge that are relevant to the quality of life of the community it aims to serve through enterprise and welfare improvement while at the same time, fulfilling the quest for knowledge and understanding of man's place in the universe.
