HISTORY
The School of Technology and Science Education (STSE) of the Federal
University of Technology, Yola was created in 1999. However, prior to
the establishment, the two departments, namely Technology Education
and Science Education that made up the School were under the former
School of Science and Technology Education. Since then, the departments
had steadily contributed systematically in the developments of competent
professionals through pre-service and in-service Education and training.
In the current Nigerian National Policy on 6-3-3-4 system of Education,
the school has served to provide fundamental and advanced understanding
of technological and scientific constituents to diverse students populations
and scholars. Every aspect of the school has grown tremendously. The
number of students it caters for has grown in lamps and bounds. With
strong and competent personnel, physical facilities, well-manned laboratories
and workshop, the stands shoulder-high in spirit, self-reliance and
leadership in the world of Technology and Science Education. Significant
component in the students programme of study is the industrial works
experience scheme and the teaching practice. The students have an opportunity
to apply what has been learned in the class room to a real work environment
for work assignments.
PHILOSOPHY
The School of technology and Science Education exists to provide opportunities
for quality technological and scientific education. This is done through
acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills and habitual work habits.
It is the philosophy of the school to integrate all individuals to be
entitled to profit from equal technological and scientific educational
opportunities and to the fullest extent of their capacities. Based on
these tenets of progressive education, the school accepts and adopts
as its mission the following premises and the ethic implied therein,
the school shall:-
a)
continue to equip potential or practicing technology and science teachers
who do not posses pedagogical qualifications with professional expertise
in respect of technical and scientific option;
b) strength trainees pedagogical competencies, research and development
(R&D) skills and community service in contemporary technical and
scientific problem-solving issues;
c)
improve the student capability in professional practice of technology
and science with managerial responsibilities;
d)
continue to update career technology and science teachers and technology
and science teacher educators with modern theory and practice of professional
educational studies;
e)
keep students abreast with state of the knowledge, skills and attitudes
to cope with technology and science advancement in their chosen area
of specializations;
f)
full enable trainees to perform entrepreneurial leadership positions
at pre-primary and primary education, post-primary institutions, tertiary
education and adult training as well as at other governmental sectors;
and
g) foster a sense of social responsibility, ethical and aesthetic values
as well as personal and professional worth to the end that graduates
will be able to provided leadership in and beyond the area of their
special technical and scientific competence.
