HISTORY
The
Federal University of Technology, Yola (subsequently referred to as
FUTY) created the School of
Postgraduate Studies in 1991
because, among other things, this School would strengthen and reinforce
the undergraduate programmes of FUTY, enhance the staff development
programme and produce high level manpower for the country.
The School of
Postgraduate
Studies is empowered by Senate to enforce
approved requirements and standards of postgraduate studies and to coordinate
the postgraduate programmes of the various Schools in FUTY.
The
functions of the School of
Postgraduate Studies shall
be exercised through and regulated by the Board of the
School
of Postgraduate Studies whose
membership and functions are set out in Section B (article 4) below.
PHILOSOPHY
The Postgraduate program of FUTY is aimed at providing postgraduate
training in selected disciplines and are directed towards solving some
identified problems in order to enhance the socio-economic and technological
development of Nigeria. Indeed FUTY, through its postgraduate programmes,
hopes to identify with the dynamic nature of the Nigeria
society. Therefore, as much as
possible, the curricula of the postgraduate programmes shall be synchronised
to reflect appropriately the general development objectives of Nigeria. The areas of study are essentially those relevant
to a University of Technology
and the programmes shall be designed in such a way that our graduates
shall either be capable of self-employment or be relevant to technological
and industrial establishments. The
postgraduate programmes shall be undertaken through course work, seminars,
research and any other modes as may be prescribed by Senate. The practical components of the programmes shall
be of paramount importance in order that the philosophy and objectives
of the postgraduate programmes in FUTY shall be fulfilled.
(a)
General Objectives
The
broad objectives of postgraduate studies in the Nigerian University
system have been enunciated by the National Universities Commission
(NUC). These include the further development, in graduate
students, of the spirit of enquiry through training in research in an
atmosphere of intellectual independence and individual creativity combined
with a strong sense of group cooperation. To this end the Postgraduate School should foster, through
instruction, a deeper understanding of elementary concepts and an increasing
ability to apply fundamental ideals to new problems. The student in the postgraduate growth and subsequent success
are directly related to his depth of command of basic principles. Hence, although graduate studies are associated with a high degree
of specialization, such specialization must be secondary to extending
mental horizons, producing new orientations, and developing a sufficient
depth of understanding. Both
short-time and long-time training facilities should be provided in order
to improve and upgrade the existing and potential high level manpower
needed for planning, executing and reviewing national development plans.
(b) Specific Objectives
(i) To adequate train academic staff for FUTY
and other Universities and also staff for both public and private research
and development institutions e.g. government, commercial and industrial
organisations. (ii) To
encourage individual or group research in any area that will supplement/complement
Local Government/Senate/National efforts for socio-economic and technological
development.
In
pursuance of the above objectives, it may be necessary to establish
and maintain collaborative links with other tertiary institutions of
learning, research and development centres and industries, both locally
and externally.
