MESSAGE FROM THE
DEAN
The Academic Brief of the School of Environmental Sciences, Federal
University of Technology, Yola 2005-2015 has been compiled with all the
necessary input from the various departments in the School. It details the
existing and projected academic programmes of the School, staffing,
facilities, equipment and other needs of the School. Apart from detailing
the contents of the courses being run in the various programmes of the
School, this document also contains a detailed description of the Vision and
Strategic Plan of the School, the research and community services agenda for
the school as well as all other projected needs of the School within the
plan period.
It is hoped that this document will not merely collect the dusts on the
shelves of our readers but will be useful in actualising the dreams of the
School within the plan period. The committee that designed this document
desires that yearly review of this plan will make it more dynamic,
responsive, and indeed respond to existing technologies, contemporary
thoughts and more current needs within the plan period. The committee
therefore detests any situation that promotes this document as the “law
of Persia that cannot be altered.”
The SES Academic Brief 2005-2015 is therefore presented to further
progressive actions on the worldwide environment at large and the Nigerian
environment in particular.
Dr. Felix Aromo Ilesanmi
Ag. Dean

August 2005.

HISTORY
The
School of Environmental Sciences, Federal University of Technology, Yola
was established in 1988 in realisation of the need to train interested
applicant in the various disciplines in Environmental Sciences
especially in the catchment zone of the university. Professor G.G.R.
Thambifilay, a sabbatical staff from the University of Maiduguri/Arid
Zone Studies Centre became the first Dean of the School. His tenure
lasted till 1989 when he returned to the University of Maiduguri at the
expiration of his sabbatical leave. The Department of Geography was the
only Department that took off that same year. A year later, the
Departments of Urban and Regional Planning as well as Surveying took
off. In 1997, the University approved the establishment of the
Departments of Architecture, Building, Industrial Design and Estate
Management. The Estate Management programme is yet to commence.
PHILOSOPHY
The
six departments in the school are closely related and collectively focused
on the science of understanding, ordering, managing and monitoring the
physical and the human environments. However, within this broad structure,
each department is specializing in one major area of the science
of the environment in order to provide a detailed theoretical and
practical spatial/temporal perspective that would help achieve a harmonious
and sustainable development. The basic thrust of the school is to develop
an integrated network of teaching and research framework that would produce
well trained and competent graduates capable of directing and managing
the complex processes of development and change, in the natural and human
environments. To achieve these, emphasis is placed on understanding the
spatial location of features, their relationships and the processes shaping
them over time. Site and situation analyses, including environmental processes
and impact of human activities, are stressed and linked to societal needs,
goals and objectives. Thus, the understanding, design, implementation
and monitoring of land cover, land uses, plans and policies at all levels
are given special consideration and topmost priority in the school. Each
department is moderately equipped to handle its area of specialization
with efforts being directed at achieving the overall objectives of a technology-focused
institution in the twenty first century. Details on each department are
provided in the pages that follow.
