BIODATA OF ABEL GBENGA FAKUADE (DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR, FUTY)

Prof. A.G. Fakuade, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) FUTY

Professor Abel Gbenga Fakuade was born on 22nd January, 1956, at Omuo Ekiti State of Nigeria. He started his primary education at St. Mary's Catholic Primary School in 1963 and completed it at the Baptist Primary School Oyin Akoko, Ondo State in 1968. He was admitted into Ajuwa Grammar School Oke-agbe Akoko in 1969.

Having got a Division I1 in West African School Certificate in 1973, he qualified to be admitted for Higher School Certificate at the Polytechnic Ibadan where he came out in flying colours in 1976 and immediately got admitted at the University of Ibadan to study English Language, the same year.

As a young and purposeful undergraduate, he was among the few students that graduated with Second Class Upper Division in English Language in 1979. Prof. Fakuade was posted to School of Preliminary Studies, Keffi in the then Plateau State for his National Service. Due to his dedication to duty, he was retained as a permanent staff after the service year and granted study fellowship to pursue a masters degree in English Language - Stylistics, a task he accomplished in 1983. Between 1983 and 1986, he rose to the rank of Lecturer I.

In January 5, 1987, however, Professor Fakuade, out of the desire to become a University don, joined the services of Modibbo Adama College, University of Maiduguri now Federal University of Technology, Yola.

In 1989 he was awarded study fellowship of the Federal University of Technology, Yola for a Ph.D. programme in Linguistics at the University of lIorin. A task he could not accomplish until January 1997 due to series of prolonged strikes embarked upon by ASUU.

His qualifications include West African School Certificate 1973, Higher School Certificate 1976, B.Ed. English (Ibadan) 1979, M.A. English - Stylistics (Ibadan) 1983, Ph.D. Linguistics (lIorin) 1997, and Certificate in Teaching, Description and Learning of English (University of Essex, Colchester England) 1990.

A distinguished scholar he has bagged the following scholarships, fellowships and awards: Ondo State Bursary Award 1974-1976, Federal Government Scholarship Award 1976-1979, School of Preliminary Studies Fellowship Award 1982-1983, Federal University of Technology, Yola. Fellowship Award 1989-1995, The British Council Scholarship Award 1990.

Professor Fakuade has been External Examiner to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria 2001-date, Editorial Consultant to Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural DeveloDment, Clevedon, England, 1996-date, Editiorial Consultant to Jalingo Journal of Language and Literature 2004 Editor-in­Chief Journal of Language Culture and Communication 2003-date.

Professor Fakuade has rich administrative experience both within and outside the University Community. He was a member of Honorary Degrees Committee 1995-1999; Member, University Council 1995-1999; Member, University Senate 1995-date; Member, University Tenders Board 1995-1996; Head, Department of Management and General Studies 1995­1999; Member, University Research Board 1996-2000; Member, Task Force on Capital Project Implementation 1996-1999; Member, Finance and General Purpose Committee 1996-1999; Member, Budget Monitoring Committee 1997-2000; Member, Senate Committee on the Creation of new Schools and Departments 1997-1999; Member, Council Committee on Send-off Party for the outgoing Vice Chancellor 1999; Member, Committee on Senior Academic Positions in FUTY; Foundation Dean, School of Management and Information Technology 1999-2000; Member, Committee of Deans and Directors 1999-2000; 2003-date; Chairman, School Board of SMIT 1999-2000; Chairman, School of Post Graduate Studies Board 2003-date; Coordinator, Management Information System 2000-2001; Member, Selection Board for the appointment of Vice ­Chancellor, FUT, Yola 2003; Coordinator, General Studies Unit 2002-2004; Member, Academic Planning Committee 2003-date; Dean, School of Post­graduate Studies 2003-date; Chairman, University Budget Estimate Committee 2004; Chairman, University Appraisal Panel for Academic Staff 2002/2003 Academic Session.

A prolific scholar, Professor Fakuade had published 31 articles in International and Local Journals and at least 5 books in different areas of English studies. He had also presented several papers at Conferences/ Seminar/Workshops. He has successfully supervised 10 Masters Students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and has some Ph.D. Students under his tutelage.

He is a member of Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), Member of Royal Society of Academy Ibadan (RSA) and Member of Nigeria English Studies Association.

A dedicated scholar, Professor Fakuade had served as Sabbatical Professor of English Language in the University of Maiduguri.

Professor Fakuade is married and has three children.
