HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

Urban and Regional Planning at the Federal University of Technology, Yola consists of a five year curriculum of studies leading to the Bachelor of Technology after successful completion. The programme took off in the 1988.89 session as the second Department after Geography, in the School of Environmental Sciences, with three staff and twenty students. The Department has made a steady growth since then. Currently it has 11 academic and 4 non-academic staff. 186 students and was recently accredited by the NITP/TOPREC.

Urban and Regional Planning is the science of ordering and managing land uses based on detailed understanding and analysis of societal needs, goals and objectives within the socio- economic, physical and environmental framework. It is concerned with the formation, design, implementation and monitoring of land use plans and policies at the local, urban and regional levels. It is a broad-based discipline requiring a comprehensive education and training in the planning, design and management of the total environment both from the theoretical and practical perspectives.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The goals of the undergraduate course of study in Urban and Regional Planning are:
(i) to produce a broad based education and training which will assist in developing the students intellectual and professional capabilities to a high standard.

(ii) to produce a sound generalist professional planner who can operate effectively in the field of Urban Planning and related activities.

(iii) to develop students understanding of Urban and Regional Planning through exposure to theories, methods and techniques for planning, designing and managing land use and environmental dynamics.

(iv) to assist the students to acquire constructive understanding of the relationship between the social, economic, technological and legislative framework of society within the physical and integrative planning processes requiring a comprehensive education and training in the planning, design and management of the total environment both from theoretical and practical perspectives.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(a) UME: A candidate who has successfully completed the Senior Secondary Certificate and passed with credit in Mathematics, English Language, Geography and two other subjects from the following list will be eligible for admission, Chemistry, Technical Drawing, Economics, Physics. Normal admission is through acceptable pass at the JAMB.

(b) DIRECT ENTRY:
A candidate who holds HND or OND in Urban and Regional Planning
would be considered for admission into 200 level of the programme.
Provided that the candidate has credit level pass in the subjects listed in (a) above.

A-level passes in Mathematics, Physics, Geography and any other subject
plus five O=level passes at credit level in the subject listed in (a) above.

DEGREE AWARDED
The Department awards the b. Tech. (URP). To qualify for this degree a student is required to have passed a minimum of 200 credit units. Furthermore, all students in the 400 level of studies are required to undertake a 6 –month period of industrial training during the second semester of the session.
