HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
Department at Inception
The Department of Statistics and Operations Research is one of the Department
of the present School of Pure and Applied Sciences of the Federal University
of Technology, Yola. The Statistics and Operations Research programmes
were established since the inception of the University in 1981. While
the Statistics programme was under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
in the School of Science, the Operations Research programme was under
the Department of Operations Research and Planning in the School of Management.
In June, 1984, during the merger with the University of Maiduguri, the
status quo for both programmes remained the same. On January 1, 1988 with
the demerger, the School of Management was relocated from Yola to Maiduguri.
In spite of this, the Operations Research programme was retained and merged
with Mathematics and Statistics, hence the department came to be known
as Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research.
On September 1, 1998, the Statistics and Operations Research department
was carved out of the Mathematics/Statistics/Operations Research department
and is today, the Department of Statistics and Operations Research.
Until 1998, the Department of Statistics and Operations Research was
running only the undergraduate program leading to the award of Bachelor
of Technology degrees in both Statistics and Operations Research respectively.
Department at Present
(i) Programs Undertaken by the Department:
The department undertakes both undergraduate and postgraduate programs
leading to the award of the degrees:
- B. Tech (Hons) in Statistics
- B. Tech (Hons) in Operations Research
- M. Tech in Operations Research
- Ph. D in Operations Research
Also, the Department has produced
postgraduate students in
both the masters and the doctoral
degree programmes. In addition, the department presently
offers four (4) service courses to all the appropriate departments in
the Schools of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Engineering and
Engineering Technology, Environmental Sciences, Management and
Information Technology and some departments of
the School of Pure and Applied Sciences.

must fulfill the following requirements;
i. Pass at credit or better level in at least five (5) subjects which
should include English Language, Mathematics and at least two (2) other
science subjects.
ii. Remedial students must have a "C" or better grade in Mathematics,
English Language and integrated science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology).
The stronger candidates' Physics background, the better equipped they
are in pursuing the programme.
iii. Candidates for direct entry into 200 level (for a four-year programme)
must in addition to satisfying condition (i) above, also obtain at least
two "A" level passes or equivalent in Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry,
Economics/Statistics/Geography.
DEGREE AWARDED: B. Tech. (Hons) (Statistics), B. Tech. (Hons) (Operations
Research)
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROBLEMS SO FAR
(i) Post graduate programs:
The department currently runs Masters and Doctoral degree programs in
Operations Research for both internal and external students.
(ii) Consultancy Services to Immediate Community:
Presently, the department does not provide Consultancy services to the
immediate community. However, the department provides consultants to the
Federal University of Technology, Yola Consultancy Services Unit for all
