HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

Department at Inception
The Department of Statistics and Operations Research is one of the Department of the present School of Pure and Applied Sciences of the Federal University of Technology, Yola. The Statistics and Operations Research programmes were established since the inception of the University in 1981. While the Statistics programme was under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the School of Science, the Operations Research programme was under the Department of Operations Research and Planning in the School of Management.

In June, 1984, during the merger with the University of Maiduguri, the status quo for both programmes remained the same. On January 1, 1988 with the demerger, the School of Management was relocated from Yola to Maiduguri. In spite of this, the Operations Research programme was retained and merged with Mathematics and Statistics, hence the department came to be known as Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research.

On September 1, 1998, the Statistics and Operations Research department was carved out of the Mathematics/Statistics/Operations Research department and is today, the Department of Statistics and Operations Research.

Until 1998, the Department of Statistics and Operations Research was running only the undergraduate program leading to the award of Bachelor of Technology degrees in both Statistics and Operations Research respectively.

Department at Present
(i) Programs Undertaken by the Department:
The department undertakes both undergraduate and postgraduate programs leading to the award of the degrees:
- B. Tech (Hons) in Statistics
- B. Tech (Hons) in Operations Research
- M. Tech in Operations Research
- Ph. D in Operations Research

Also, the Department has produced postgraduate students in both the masters  and the  doctoral degree programmes. In addition, the department presently offers four (4) service courses to all the appropriate departments in the Schools of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Environmental Sciences, Management and Information Technology and some departments of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS AND JOURNALS OF THE DEPARTMENT

Formation of the National Society of Operations Research:
The department is the first to run Operations Research (OR) as a discipline in both undergraduate and post graduate programs in the whole of Nigeria and one of the only two universities in the whole of Africa. It is the department's vision and mission therefore to encourage the formation of the above body so as to promote and expose OR potentials to the country's labour market and the international community. This is because presently there is no OR society at the national level that can bring together OR graduates produced by the department and for conference organisation, or seminar or workshop as is the practice in South Africa (which is the only African country that has OR society at the national level). The formation will help promote OR in Nigeria in particular and the African continent at large, where the awareness of OR is still at its cradle stage.

To serve as a centre for Database:
The department has competent academic staff who are actively involved in research. The department has just concluded a research on the price index of some selected commodities in Adamawa State. The department therefore wishes to be a centre where data should be kept and supplied to both the university community and the outside community whenever the need arises.

To be a centre for Demographic Studies:
The department is endowed with academic staff who are well trained in the area of demography and who have actively participated in researches in the area of demography. Recently two of her staff were awarded research grant to conduct research on the Nuptiality and Fertility of some selected areas of Adamawa State. Also some of the undergraduates have been undertaking their undergraduate projects in demography. With these potentials, the department can serve as centre for demographic studies for Adamawa State in particular and the country at large.

CONSULTANCY SERVICES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department, endowed with the above quality of lecturers can run the following consultancy services, to her community in the following areas:
- Management Consultancy
- Population Census Consultancy
- Project Management, evaluation and Review Consultancy
- Statistics Analysis Consultancy for:
- Hospitals
- Agricultural Research
- Road Accident Analysis
- Weather Forecasts
- Researchers
