HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

Science Education Department came into existence in September, 1998. Prior to this period, Science Education had been taught in this University as a Programme under the Technology Education Department since 1990/91 academic session. With this development on ground, it did graduate science teachers of various disciplines of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics Education .
 

DEPARTMENTAL PHILOSOPHY

The relevance of any educational Programme is seen when it meets the needs of the society. The Philosophy has therefore guided the design and development of science education programmes in the Federal University of Technology, Yola. In each of the areas of specialisation mounted in this Department namely:- Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geography and Statistics Education, attention is focused on providing specific skills to science teacher who would impart same to their students in respective schools. Both its undergraduate and Post graduate programmes are designed to prepare recipients to be professionally competent, and to posses requisite knowledge, skills and desirable work attitudes in secondary and tertiary educational institutions.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. NCE with distinction, credit or merit in the major, plus at least 4 credits in the SSCE (WASC or GCE “O” Level) in relevant subjects; or Grade II Teachers’ Certificate with a minimum of merit grade in at least 4 relevant subjects.
2. GCE “A” level or its equivalent in two relevant subjects, plus 4 credits in the relevant “O” level subjects.
3. UME: A satisfactory level of performance in the UME plus 5 credits in not more than two sittings in the SSCE or its equivalent.

DURATION OF STUDY
The direct Entry programme lasts for four (4) academic sessions, while students admitted through the UME spend five (5) academic sessions to graduate. Please refer to programme structure above.

Teaching and Research Facilities Available in the Department

The Department has the Head of Departments' office , a general office, and other offices for staff accommodation. Additionally, there are other facilities like functional computer sets, a manual typewriter, office cabinets, furniture, and other equipment for teaching and research.

FUTY GETS NEW VICE CHANCELLOR

Professor B.H. Usman has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University0 of Technology, Yola (FUTY). Until his appointment, Professor B.H. Usman was the past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice Chancellor, FUTY.

He has a B.Sc. in Agriculture (Soil Science) with a second class honours, upper division degree, from the University of Maiduguri. M.Sc. in Soil Chemistry, University of Reading, England, U.K. and Ph.D in Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Management from the University of London, Wye College, England, U.K.

He now becomes the 6th Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.     More>>
