HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
The Department was created put of the
Department of Biological Sciences in the 1996/97 session. Microbiology
is a field that deals with the study of diverse group of micro organisms
that exist as single cells or cell clusters. Microbiology is one of the
most important Biological Sciences. The field provides some of the most
accessible research tools for probing the nature of life processes as
the understanding of chemical and physical principles behind living
processes has arisen from studies using Micro organisms. Microbiology
deals with many important practical problems in medicine, agriculture
and Industry as some of the most important diseases of human, animal and
plants are caused by micro organisms. They also play major roles in soil
fertility, animal production and many large-scale industrial processes.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE
The main objective of introducing B. Tech. Microbiology programme in
the Federal University of Technology, Yola is to produce highly trained
graduates in the field of Microbiology and to equip these graduates with
skills and techniques in the various specialties of Microbiology which
are relevant to the needs and objectives of the country. Emphasis is
placed is place on exposing the students to relevant local industries
for practical experience to supplement their class room and laboratory
exercises so that they are adequately trained to work at various sectors
of the economy such as hospital, research institutions, food and dairy
industries, breweries, beverages producing industries, water and waste
water treatment plants, agriculture and pest control programme etc.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for admission into the B. Tech. Microbiology programme
must, in addition to fulfilling the basic general requirements of the
Federal University of Technology, also fulfill the following
requirements:
Pass at
credit level in at least five subjects which should include Chemistry,
Biology, Physics, Mathematics at senior secondary school examination or
equivalent. These candidates are admitted at 100 level for a five year
programme.
Candidate
for direct entry at 200 level for a four year programme must in addition
to satisfying condition (i) above also obtain at least two advance level
passes or equivalent in Biology and Chemistry.
Course
Requirements
As the University runs a two semester system, courses are arranged
either as first or second semester courses. The courses are classified
as either core or elective courses. All students must take and pass the
core courses before being considered for the award of B.Tech.
Microbiology degree. The elective courses are those courses among which
students will select to meet the minimum number of credit units required
for the award of a degree in the programme.
Examination
Each course is examined at the end of semester the course is offered.
In addition, at least two continuous assessment tests are given during
the semester the course is offered. The end of semester examination will
constitute 70% of the overall grade while the continuous assessment
tests and practical assessments will make up 30%.
