HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in October 1990 with three Academic Staff and Students. Presently the department has an approximate number of students of 204 at undergraduate level, and has graduated about 86 graduands since inception. Approval has been granted to the department to run Masters of Engineering Programme (M. Eng) in the fields of Design of Solid Mechanics and Industrial and Production Engineering. The Programme will take off in October 2002. Also the department is on the process of mounting Postgraduate diploma in Mechanical Engineering and a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) in Mechanical engineering.

The Philosophy of the B. Eng (Mech) degree of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to provide professional careers in Engineering and for responsible positions of technical and semi –technical character in industry, commerce, educational institution and government.

Our curricular are built on the general foundation of scientific theory applicable to many different fields. The relevance of practical/industrial training in developing confidence in young engineers for design of physical devices has been taken into account. The curriculum incorporated practical problems similar to these solved by practicing engineers.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The Department admits students through UME, Direct entry and FUTY Pre-Degree Programme. However, with effect from 2001/2002 Session, all pre-degree students of FUTY must write and pass UME as a condition for their placement into 100 level. The UME requirement is five credits in Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry and any other Science subject at not more than two sittings. Direct Entry requires students who had passed OND/HND with a minimum of lower credit and at least three O’ Level passes at credit level in relevant subjects or two A’ Level passes in the relevant subjects with at least three O’ Level passes at credit level in English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Technical Drawing.

DURATION OF THE STUDY

The undergraduate programme runs in minimum of four years for direct entry student programme and a maximum of seven years.

DEGREE  AWARDED: The degree awarded is B. Eng. (Mechanical).

 CURRICULA AND COURSE SYNOPSIS

The programme runs for a minimum of 5 academic years and maximum of 7 academic years comprising of 2 Semesters in each academic year.

At100 level students study basic Science Courses, which are taught by the School of Pure and Applied Sciences.

At 200 level basic Engineering Courses, which are common to all departments in the School of Engineering, are studied. All students of this level undergo “Student Work   experience programme” (SWEP) for 8 weeks during the long vacation.

At 300 level, general-study courses and core courses in Mechanical Engineering discipline are taught. During the long vacation students are required to go for 2 to 3 months Industrial Training.

At 400 level, core courses in Mechanical Engineering discipline are taught in the first semester while students are required to undergo Industrial Training called “Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme” for the whole of the second semester. This lasts for about 6 months.

At 500 level, which is the final year of the degree programme, students are required to specialize in Mechanical Engineering.
