HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The challenges of the Department of Geology are enormous. These include fulfilling the expected roles in the national drive to increasing proven oil and gas reserves; developing metallic, non-metallic and construction materials, promoting water supplies, harnessing alternative energy sources, intensifying environmental monitoring, ensuring reliable foundations, pavements and buildings and enhancing agricultural yields. Furthermore, thorough schemes for generating employments and improving living conditions, especially in the rural areas, as well as the provision of high quality training for relevant professionals, experts and researchers certainly demands an efficient and well organized Geology Department.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The objective of the department is to offer a professional course leading to the award of a B. Tech. Degree in Geology. This professional degree may be obtained either through the 5-year standard schedule for candidates who gain admission through the University Matriculation EXAMINATION (U.M.E) or 4 years schedule for candidates who gain admission through the direct entry. In either case, students are required in the first and second year of the programme to complete foundation courses in Mathematic, Statistics, Computer science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology to enhance their comprehension of the courses in the programme.
