HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The present department of Mathematics and Computer Science was established in 1999 from the former and one of the founding departments of the university, the department of Mathematics/Statistics/Operations Research which also gave birth to the department of Statistics and Operations Research the same year. From its inception, the department offered courses that led to the award of B.Tech degrees either in Mathematics or Statistics or Operations Research. At the moment the department offers three undergraduate programmes leading to the award of B.Tech (Hons) degrees either in Mathematics or Computer Science or Mathematics with Economics respectively. Some of the founding staff of the departments include Prof. Sam Ale of the National Mathematical Centre Abuja and Dr. Mike O. Egwurube, current Head of Department and immediate past Dean School of Pure and Applied Sciences.

Our goal and philosophy is having a world class of Mathematicians where the myriads of problems around the globe will find feasible solutions. This is to be achieved through collaborating with like –minded institutions both in teaching, research and training as well as in employing up-to-date and relevant technologies.

OBJECTIVES

The undergraduate programmes of the department have been designed to accomplish some of the following: To Train graduates

i)          in Mathematics/Computer Science/ Mathematics with Economics who can cope with related demands of the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy.

ii)         in Computer Science with not only adequate quantitative techniques to manage industrial problems but also with adequate experience to maintain systems they use.

iii)        with adequate skills and knowledge of mathematical econometric models, techniques and processes and their applications to solving problems in the public and private sectors of the economy.

iv)        with competence in Mathematics/Computer Science/Mathematics with Economics and related courses who can confidently pursue post graduate programmes in their respective discipline and related courses.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The duration of B.Tech degrees in the department is five (5) years through University Matriculation Examination (UME) beginning at 100 level or four (4) years through Direct Entry (DE) beginning at 200 level. All DE candidates must satisfy UME entry requirements as well. Teaching and Research Facilities Available in the Department

Each of the staff offices in the department is equipped with PC sets for teaching and research. This is in addition to the computer laboratory for practical demonstration of some theoretical concepts by both staff and students. The department is within a walking distance to the Computer Centre and in close proximity to Ibrahim Babangida Library. The department collaborates with National Mathematical Centre Abuja and American University of Nigeria Yola in research and (re)training of staff and students.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME
The Department currently runs postgraduate programmes leading to the award of M. Sc degree by course work in Mathematics with specialization in Algebra, Differential equations, Mathematical modeling, Numerical Analysis and Computational Optimization. The M. Sc degree in Computer Science is expected to take off in 2010. The department runs PhD degree in Computer Science or Mathematics by research. Click to view curriculum for M. Sc Mathematics.
