HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
The Department of Information Technology came into existence in 1999/2000
session after the approval of the programme by the University Senate
which was upheld by the National Universities Commission. The department
took off from the defunct General Studies Unit. In 2000/2001, the department
admitted its first set of students into 100 and 200 levels respectively.
PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Without doubt, the new millennium is the age of Information Technology;
an age in which the revolution in computing and information handling
is going to be so profound as to affect every facet of our national
life. Nowhere will this revolution be more noticeable than in the field,
of information management which has witnessed radical transformations
with the introduction of new technologies for the storage, processing
and provision of massive quantities of information to millions of people
at the fastest possible speed and the shortest possible time. This phenomenon
calls for innovative programmes that seek to equip students with skills
which combine knowledge of management and communication with relevant
knowledge of Information Technology to enable them function effectively
in their role as Information Technology managers in the new information
age.
The B.
Tech. Degree in Information and Communication Technology is an innovative
programme designed to build the human capacity in Information Technology
and communication studies to meet the growing need in public and private
sector organisations for Professionals with relevant Information Technology
(IT) and management knowledge and skills.
To this
end, the degree focuses on IT studies with emphasis on the hands-on
acquisition of a range of marketable ‘real-world’ competencies
and management principles which address both the human and the ‘systems’
sides of management. In addition, emphasis is placed on communication
studies including writing and presentation skills.
