HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The department of Industrial Design was established by the University Senate in 1991. The establishment embraced a 5-year intensive programme leading to the award of B.Tech. Industrial Design with specialisation in Ceramics, Textiles and Graphics. At the inception, the initial intake of students was thirteen with only three academic staff members and two non-teachings aboard. Presently, the staff strength has risen drastically to fourteen composing of twelve Academic staff and two non- academic staff. At the initial stage of the department, as expected, the department lacked some teaching materials, equipment and tools for effective teaching of students in all the areas of specialisation. The uniqueness of the department is attributed to the academic deliverance of the dedicated lecturers who are always ready to contribute to the growth and well being of the unit.

The programmes embarked upon in the department are in essence multi-disciplinary in nature, which give opportunity to individual to operate freely and academically within the philosophy of design, art and craft. The range of aesthetics expressions of the students and lecturers are similarly plural and cross-cultural. On the whole, the department focuses basically on the production of tangible, functional, aesthetic oriented conceptual objects that could be of immense value for private and industrial use. In like vein, the programmes aim at exploiting the rich industries with new concepts and equally proffer solutions to problems concerning creativity in the industrial world. Students are solely trained to experiment, create new focus and concepts and to explore new mode in Design.

The training also deals with conceptualization, designing, shaping, colouring, finishing, decorating, modelling and producing prototypes of products and objects. The interrelationship between art, science and technology makes it possible for Industrial Designers to gain insight into cultural, traditional and contemporary designs to meet the environmental needs.

i. The range of exposure and the scope of the Programmes in Industrial Design are aimed at producing competent, skilled and creative industrialist capable of upholding, sustaining and linking educational experiences to the values and needs of the society.

ii. The programme is also aimed at exploiting the rich cultural and traditional design and production processes to enrich various industries.

iii. To involve institutions in the process of exploiting design and production problems of our National Industries generally and attempt to find solutions to the problems.

iv. To promote the National Industry through original designs and adaptability to meet the fast changing needs of the society.

Successes Recorded in the Department

At the initial stage, the students' intake was just thirteen (13) but presently this has increased over the years to ninety-two (92) students. Staff development, which is usually very crucial in every university setting, took off in the department in 1999 and to date five (5) academic staff have benefitted from the programme. Till date the department has been able to graduate twenty-five (25) students, thus contributing to the manpower need of the country.

Potentials of the Department

Graduates from the department are trained to be self-sufficient, self-reliant and job creators, thus with their academic career that embraces both theory and practice, they are being propelled to help in setting up cottage industries that could be of value to nation building.

Challenges

The department's main challenge is to have full accreditation when the time comes. We have been having "Partial" status and it is our hope that the forth coming accreditation exercise would be more favourable. To meet all these demands, the institution has to help in giving the department the backing it needs.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS AND JOURNALS OF THE DEPARTMENT

i. The department has an ongoing research in accessing the Industrial Designer’s contribution to small and large scale industries in four major towns (Ganye, Mubi, Numan and Yola ) in Adamawa State. It is an inventory of related industries or organizations in relation to the area of specialization in the department which are Ceramics, Graphics and Textiles. It looks into accessing employed and trained designer’s (if any) contribution in such industries.

ii. The completed research study into identification of iron bearing stones found with in the locality are used to produce iron oxide (feo) and Ceramics stains. Iron bearing stones can be found around Girei, Jimeta and Yola town in large quantity for the production.

iii. The department serves as an adjunct Consultant to the Family Development Centre (FDC) Yola, Adamawa State.
