HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

Geology was one of the disciplines planned for the school of Earth and Mineral Sciences before the merger with University of Maiduguri in 1984. In 1986 a committee was set up to submit proposals for the establishment of Faculty of Earth and Mineral Sciences/Environmental studies at Modibbo  Adama College Yola which later metamorphosed into the Federal University of Technology, Yola (FUTY).

That committee ended by proposing the school of Environmental Sciences with the following disciplines namely: Geology, Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Surveying and Photogrammetry. The School of Environmental Sciences took off in 1988/89 academic session, but Geology department was not approved by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) to be under the School of Environmental Sciences. Hence it was moved to the school of Science and Technology Education. The Department is now under the School of Pure and Applied Sciences. The department of Geology took off in the 1989/90 session to run a four-year Degree Programme with an initial intake of Twenty-one students, and graduated nineteen of this set in 1992.

However, in 1990/91 session, a five-year B.Tech. Degree programme was introduced to be in harmony with other related programmes of related Universities.  The year 1995 marked the graduation of the first set of five-year B.Tech. Degree students.  The department of Geology has post-graduate programmes in Applied Geophysics and Mineral Exploration.  These consist of M.Sc in Mineral Exploration and Applied Geophysics and Ph.D in same fields.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The challenges of the Department of Geology are enormous. These include fulfilling the expected roles in the national drive to increasing proven oil and gas reserves; developing metallic, non-metallic and construction materials, promoting water supplies, harnessing alternative energy sources, intensifying environmental monitoring, ensuring reliable foundations, pavements and buildings and enhancing agricultural yields.

Furthermore, thorough schemes for generating employments and improving living conditions, especially in the rural areas, as well as the provision of high quality training for relevant professionals, experts and researchers certainly demands an efficient and well organized Geology Department.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

The objective of the department is to offer a professional course leading to the award of a B.Tech. Degree in Geology.  This professional degree may be obtained either through the 5-year standard schedule for candidates who gain admission through the University Matriculation Examination (U.M.E) or 4 years schedule for candidates who gain admission through the Direct entry.  In either case, students are required in the first and second year of the programme to complete foundation courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology to enhance their comprehension of the courses in the programme.
