HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
Geography
Department was established in October 1988. Conventionally Geography is
a subject which aims at understanding the differential character of the
earth’s surface. There are many ways of achieving this aim and so
we find that there are many kinds of geographers. Some are in the physical
aspects of their subject where they study how land forms, soils, climates
and plants vary from place to place. Others are interested in human activities;
they examine population, economy, transportation, settlement and so on.
In all these, geographers not only aim at discovering processes and spatial
patterns but also the interaction and inter-relationship between process,
pattern, land and people.
Over
the last 20 years virtually all Geography Departments in Nigerian Universities
have revised their syllabuses to reflect the geographical relevance in
the areas of theoretical formulation; practical utilization of geographical
concepts in the solution of spatial problems and planning, as well as
articulation of man - environment relationship. The Department of Geography
in a Technology Institutions like ours is not an exception. Efforts have
been made in the past years since the establishment of the Department
in 1988 to review and up date the course based on the felt needs of our
immediate communities. In 1991/92 Session the courses were reviewed. Similarly,
in 1993 the courses were reviewed and again updated in 1999/2000 with
emphasis on Rural Development, Land Resources Management, Remote and GIS
sensing applications and Regional Development.
The
undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in the Department of Geography
are designed to provide skilled and adequate manpower in planning and
Management of man’s environment and resources. The problem of resources
for the growing world for which the geographers must apply their skills
is the basis for offering programmes in applied geography. Fundamental
to this problem is the geographical methods of studying the inter-relationship
between the physical environment, the economy, the nature of society within
the context of changing situations at all levels, from the most local
to regional, national and global scales.
The
purpose of the programmes are to produce a breed of graduates who will
be concerned with evaluation, exploitation and management of human and
natural resources, imbued with a clear understanding of the relevant physical,
behavioral and information systems, through which man can optimise his
use of these resources. These programmes are developed at a time when
the pressure on Nigerian resources is increasing thus demanding a more
rational and foresighted approach to resource management and allocation.
