HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The ecological region in which the Federal University of Technology is situated belongs to a region of Agricultural, Forestry and Wildlife Activities. The region is interspersed with wood and grassland savannah.

In order to utilise and improve the existing resources of this area in forestry, wildlife and range, there was the need to establish a department of forestry and management. The objectives of which are to train the needed manpower that will manage the resources, conduct researches on the status, sustainability, development and management of these resources as well as advising the government and the local people on sustainable utilization and management of their resources. The high incidence of animal husbandry particularly by the extensive system further necessitates conducting researches on grazing systems and their utilization in the region with a view to developing sustainable utilization methods thereby checking land and resources degradation usually caused by over grazing bush burning for forage.

In the light of the foregoing and considering the fact that there was no higher institution awarding degree in Forestry, range and wildlife in the region, the need to establish a department of forestry, and wildlife management can not be over emphasized. Hence the establishment of the department in 1989 alongside with other departments of the school. Since its inception a number of researches have been conducted individually and collectively by the staff of the department, and in 1995, its first batch of production oriented graduates were produced.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

All obtainable human, fiscal, technological, and material resources would be maximised to:

  • help our students to effectively learn and adapt relevant currently-known scientific principles and technological advancements

  • enhance our students' inherent potentials by guiding them into innovative research that are vital to societal needs

  • impart into our students, the passion for environmental protection and sustainable utilisation of natural resources

  • learn along with our students, ground-breaking ways of achieving maximum economic development at minimal ecological cost

  • be a formidable Team of Tutors, Researchers and Students that would exert a sustained positive impact on our university and city, our profession (Sustainable Environmental Resources Management) and the socio-ecological status of our Country.
