HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
The Department of
Chemical Engineering was formally established in
the school
of Engineering
and Engineering Technology in October 1990 with
an initial intake of 11 Students at 200 level of
the five year B. Eng. Chemical Engineering
programme. The programme gives students
education and training leading to professional
competence in the design, management and
operation of process plants in the chemicals and
related industries.
Areas in which chemical engineers have been employed include
(but are not limited to) the sugar, food, dye,
plastics, industrial gases, adhesive, chemicals,
pulp and paper, soaps and detergents and
petroleum and petrochemical industries. An increasing number are also being
employed in the financial industry.
The programme
consists of a sound grounding in the basic
physical sciences combined with management
training, core chemical engineering courses,
technical electives and other engineering
courses, to provide a broad based engineering
curriculum.
Each student is also required to prepare a
detailed process design as one of the key
requirements for graduation. An independent
undergraduate research project completes the
student’s preparation for a career in industry
or in research and process/product development.
A major aim of the programme is to produce chemical engineers
who have the ability, innovativeness and
commitment to duty to identify and solve various
technical problems to a high professional
standard, and to develop methods of processing
raw materials into useful products in a safe and
economically viable way, without damage to the
environment.
