HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

Department of ChemistryThe Department of Chemistry was established in 1981 at the beginning of the University and was intended then to pursue programmes in many areas of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The merger of the university with the university of Maiduguri in 1984 affected this orientation of the programmes.

On the demerger in 1988, and with the university regaining its former status of university of technology, the emphasis has again been focused on applied chemistry courses. The department now runs programmes in Pure Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry.

The department brings together qualified experts in a range of chemical disciplines within an innovative framework of scholarship with an established reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The department occupies a modern building which can boasts of high quality laboratory facilities to support these programmes.

The success of these prestigious programmes is reflected in the employment record of its graduates in industries, government agencies etc. The department over the years provided consultancy services to some industries in the locality such as Nigerian Beverages Ltd. Yola and government agency such as the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund. We still attract considerable support and close links with industrial and government establishments.

The programmes in Chemistry primarily were designed to provide high standard of academic achievements and opportunity of interacting with the industry by understanding and exploitation nature, synthesis of new materials essential to the enhancement of the quality of life, and the surge in and sustenance of economic and technological progress through research projects in chemistry.

The teaching objectives of chemistry programmes are as follows:

(i) To provide a broad and balanced chemical education to students through the teaching of Chemistry courses and such allied courses that would enable them to develop analytical minds.
(ii) To train students who will acquire scientific and technical skills in order to utilize existing technologies and adopt and developed new ones.
(iii) To provide students with thorough understanding of chemical knowledge which emphasizes practical skills and a wide range of transferable skills applicable in chemical and non-chemical areas leading to self employment purposes.
(iv) To engage in research activities that will uplift the standard of living of the immediate communities and to add to the scientific and technological growth of the country.
(v) To provide students with a solid base of chemical knowledge and skills which prepares them for postgraduate studies and/or research in specialized areas of chemistry or in multidisciplinary areas in which chemistry is an important component.
(vi) To generate in students appreciation of chemistry in industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social context.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(i) Candidates must possess credits at WASC/GCE/SSCE in at least five subjects including English language, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and any other subject. A pass in Biology is an advantage.
(ii) Candidates admitted directly will normally enroll in the second year of the programme. To qualify for direct entry, candidates must satisfy the requirements set out in the WASC/GCE/SSCE requirement above. In addition they must have passes at credit level in the GCE Advanced level, JAMB or equivalent in at least two subjects, one of which must be chemistry and either mathematics, physics or biology. The passes in the two subjects must be obtained in one sitting.

REQUIREMENT FOR THE AWARD OF B.TECH DEGREE

To be eligible for the award of B. Tech degree in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, the candidate must have satisfied the following conditions:
(i) The normal university requirements.
(ii) The approved requirements of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences;
(iii) The programme requirement which involve mainly satisfactory completion of the compulsory courses, the restricted elective courses and other approved courses;
(iv) An Industrial attachment with a satisfactory grade.

DEGREE AWARDED: B. Tech with option in Pure and Industrial Chemistry

DURATION OF COURSE
Students are expected to spend a total of five academic sessions for a B. Tech degree. Furthermore, one year of the five years is set aside for Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
