HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The Department of building started in 1997 with six (6) student. The need for reviewing the program arises as a result of the following:

i)     To improve on the relevance of Building practice particularly in relation to the emerging building characteristics.

ii)    To introduce building courses at 100 level without jeopardizing the science and technology component of their training.

iii)  To introduce into the program new and current ideas, best practices and developing trends in building.

iv) To incorporate into the program recommendations by NUC accreditation team and the input of The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) and the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).

v)   Some service courses in other departments have either ceased to exist or codes have been changed.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy underlying building education is to develop and advance the science and practice of building technology and construction management. Building technology involves building assembly/construction techniques; while construction management involves planning and control of building process in the area of site management, contract management and financial management. Building graduates are expected to devote a substantial part of their professional career to solving rational problems of how to make Nigeria technologically independent as well as break new grounds in all aspects of building technologies and processes.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the program are to produce competent graduates in building construction process and its management. In addition, provides sufficient general knowledge and specialized skills/techniques, which enable the professional Builder to coordinate and control the technological, economic, human and material resources involved in the building process.

The building graduate is also trained to interact with other allied professionals in the construction industry. Since lack of maintenance of any building accelerates its own deterioration and collapse, there is need to groom the graduates in the art, science, techniques and culture of building maintenance.

Graduates in building are expected to perform the following activities that have become standard practice in the profession all over the world:

  1. Project management consultancy including financial planning as direct service to the client
  2. Construction management of contracts and direct labour projects
  3. Building maintenance management including conversion, improvements, alteration, etc of existing buildings
  4. Preparation of estimates and budgets for building works
  5. Consultancy in structural design of building structures.
