HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
Biological Sciences Department is one of the oldest departments in this
institution. It existed since the inception of this University in 1981.
The Department had Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biology
Education as its programmes. Recently the department has been split
into three viz: Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Microbiology
and Department of Biochemistry. The present Department of Biological
Sciences has two programmes namely: Zoology and Botany materials and
space were shared between the three departments. The department has
one big laboratory and three (3) small ones. One of the small laboratories
used as Postgraduate Research Laboratory.
PHILOSOPHY
The general philosophy of the B. Tech. programme in Biological Sciences
with specific emphasis on Botany and Zoology is to bring together in
an integrated fashion trainings of young but qualified secondary school
leavers with the sole intention that they will acquire good discipline,
knowledge and skills with practical exposures in various course discipline
in Zoology and Botany. Thus preparing them for specialization career
training at the Masters level in our university. Other university, Research
institutes. To be good citizens for National development, and enhancing
manpower generation particularly at the local government and State levels
and Federal parastatals.
OBJECTIVES
It is hoped that training of our young school levers here in Federal
University of Technology, Yola will reduce the cost of maintenance and
transportation to other far-of institutions. It is also hoped that we
will succeed in producing experts who will be gainfully employed in
all aspects of National development. And to provide foundations for
students who plan to pursue specializations at the
M.Sc., M.Tech. or Ph.D. in any aspects of Botany and Zoology.

CAREER
PROSPECTS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Although the word “career” originates from the
French word (“carrier”) which literally means
“road” “racecourses”, today, the first meaning that comes to our mind is A LIFE-WORK or PROFESSION
OR OCCUPATION. What one needs in a “career” is the
swiftness
and excitement of a racecourse not a dull day-to-day routine of a job.
For so many people a career, in Biological Sciences provides an answer.
What sets Biological Science apart as a lucrative career is not just
the relatively high salary but also the continuing stimulation and challenge
one received from co-workers, the plants, and animals (including man)
that one works with
With university
training in the Biological Sciences, the sky is perhaps the limit to
all the available opportunities you have to a lucrative future. A degree
in Biological Sciences can set you on a path to higher grounds in your
life pursuits.
With a training in Biological Sciences you may decide to go into Medicine
or Allied Medical Fields, such as Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health,
Veterinary Medicine, Museum and Zoological Work, Careers in Game Reservation,
Forestry, Food Industries, Paper Industry, Pest Control, Pharmaceutical
Work, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Microbiology, Science in Mass Communication,
Hydrobiology and of course Teaching (Secondary School, College of Technology,
University).
Initially,
signing up for a course in Biological Sciences may appear to you as
just “a small step” but eventually it may be a “giant
step for your future”.
A. To be
specific, with a B.Sc. in Botany, you can train at a professional level
in:
i Pharmacognosy,
This is a rare field and rare opportunity and an exclusive property
of a botanist. You will be involved in a pharmaceutical drug development.
ii you
can train a Geneticist, for this sky is your limit as respected external
agencies like the ICRISAT, ICGEB who are actively involved in the development
of transgenic plant varieties (pests drought resistant, and general
product improvements? Will be running as for you to be part of research
programme that is very beneficial to man kind.
iii You
can train as a weed biologist, or go into Agriculture proper-crop production
and protection, thus killing two birds with one stone.
iv External
agencies can train you as timber or a fibre specialist for the paper
industries.
B. With
a B.Sc. in Zoology, you stand the chance of being trained as:
i Human
parasitologists, World Health Organisation has no three respected field
as these you will be evolved in their parasite investigation where you
will earn super hard currencies; other respected health Organisation
will be after you.
ii You
will also be trained as a Vet. Doctor and will be eligible to work in
any veterinary health clinic or animal care.
iii The
respected Marine and Oceanograph research units will be your unit/office
one day.
iv Or,
have a respected career in the Navy.
These
are just few tips amongst many.
The Department
of Biological Sciences runs a Bachelor of Technology degree programme
in each of the following specialized areas named Botany and Zoology

ii Direct
entry at 200 level must in addition to fulfilling condition (i) above
must also obtain at least two ‘A’ level passes in Biology
and Chemistry.
iii Candidates
with Higher National Diploma or equivalent in appropriate discipline
with at least a lower credit will be considered at a level appropriate
to their qualifications provided they satisfy condition (i) above.
