HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
The Department was established
in 1997 with an initial intake of 17 students with 6 Lecturers.
(i) The range of exposure and the scope of
the programme in a department of Architecture should produce a competent
skilled and versatile individual capable of facing a broad spectrum of
challenges of Environmental Design in Nigeria, exploiting the rich cultural
and traditional Architecture resources in the country in general and within
its immediate environment in particular.
(ii) A Department of Architecture should be
engaged in understanding the Environmental Design problems of its immediate
community and should make efforts towards evolving solutions to these
problems.
(iii) There should be some flexibility in the course
to allow for the changing needs of architectural education arising from
changing social, economic, psychological, and technological environment.
Objectives
(i) To produce environmental designers capable of
understanding and solving Complex environmental
design problems.
(ii) To develop the students’ ability in the area
of environmental design, as well as related area of knowledge and to apply
this knowledge to solve the environmental problems of the country effectively.
(iii) To create the understanding of the physical,
cultural, economic, and technical contexts of design.
(iv) To develop the ability to analyze design problems
and the synthesis of the various elements, providing appropriate solutions
in the process.
(v) To create understanding of the physical, cultural,
social economic and technical contexts of design.
(vi) To develop the ability to communicate design
proposals in the appropriate medium to clients, the public, and members
of the building profession.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
(i) Joint Matriculation Examination: A candidate who has successfully completed
the Senior Secondary School Certificate and Passes with Credit in Mathematics,
English Language, Physics and two other subjects from the following list
will be eligible for Admission, Chemistry, Technical Drawing, Fine Arts,
Geography and Economics. Normal Admission should be through acceptable
pass at the Entrance Examination organized by JME;
(ii) Direct
Entry Admission
(a) A Candidate who holds an OND or HND in
Architecture would be considered for Admission into the 200 level of the
programme provided the Candidate in addition has credit level passes in
the subjects listed in 3 (a) above
