FUTY GETS NEW VICE CHANCELLOR

Professor B.H. Usman has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University0 of Technology, Yola (FUTY). Until his appointment, Professor B.H. Usman was the past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice Chancellor, FUTY.

He has a B.Sc. in Agriculture (Soil Science) with a second class honours, upper division degree, from the University of Maiduguri. M.Sc. in Soil Chemistry, University of Reading, England, U.K. and Ph.D in Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Management from the University of London, Wye College, England, U.K.

He now becomes the 6th Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.     More>>

ABOUT THE CENTRE

Computer centre was established in 1991 with the sole aim of providing computing and information technology facilities for staff, students and the community at large, so as to support learning  and research amoung others. The centre took off with  20 NCR 80286 pcs, 20 vax 3300 mini computer terminals supported by2  vax 3300 servers, 1 unit of I00 kv perkins generating set, I unit of giant stabilizer and 1 unit of industrial UPS.Due to the dynamics of technology, all the NCR 80286 PCs, Vax 3300 minicomputer  terminals. Vax 3300 servers and the industrial UPS have been retired, due to obsolesce. In terms of office /laboratory accommodation, computer centre building houses the following:

i. Five computer laboratories

ii. Six offices

The staffing situation at take off time was made up of: Head of unit, 3No Programmers,

1 NO Secretary, 2 NO cleaner. However, due to some factors the current staffing situation is made up of 1 no. Head of Department, 1 NO chief system analysis, 2 NO maintenance technicians, 1 NO computer operator, 1 NO and cleaner.

Organization and philosophy

Computer centre is a specialized unit established specifically for computing and related activities in a university of technology like ours, technological capacity building, specific and multidisplinary research and development are some of the special thrusts and goals of the university beside teaching and community service. Computer systems, software and related equipments are centre in achieving the goals. Because of the diverse nature of disciplines, programmes, department/units in the university, it may not be cost effective to provide all computing facilities to support specific and multi- disciplinary research for each there is a need to have a common computer centre where most, if not all, of computing facilities will be provided in optimum quantity and quality. However this may not be achieved without proper planning and stratified implementation. It is in line with the facts that the idea for specialized computer centre was nature established.

VISION AND MISSION

Vision Statement

The vision of the centre is to make significant contributions towards the application of information technology principles and practice in meeting divers human needs in a developing nation like ours. Our detailed vision is to be able to:

a)   a. Develop/ deploy application /operating system software

b. Fabricate and assemble computer system unit

c. Maintain both hardware/software of computer systems and peripherals

d. Development  processor architecture design

e. Deploy and support e-Education for the university

 Mission Statement

The mission of the centre is to promote inter discipline research and capacity building. Our detailed mission include

 i.   Provide support for teaching and capacity building

 ii.  Support specific and multidisplinary research and development

 iii. Provide community service through consultancy service  or otherwise.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives for establishing computer centre can be summarized as follows:

Our general objective is to accomplish our mission as spelt out above.

FUNCTIONS

In relation to the above aims and objectives, the centre has been functioning despite limited facilities and resources at her disposal to:

1. Support undergraduate and consultancy students' teaching.

2. Support capacity building through workshops and seminar presentations.

3. Support staff and students' research through data analysis and Internet browsing.

4. Offering consultancy services in the area of computer literacy to the host community.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

The Computer Centre of Federal University of Technology, Yola is an independent unit.  It is  charged with the following responsibilities.

1. To provide computing resources for the conduct of research by the University Community. 

2. To provide facilities for training of students, public and private organization in Computing Technology.

3. To provide sundry consultancy on information technology and new technology towards application of same to clients.

4. To provides technical aids and minor repairs on both hardware and software to the University community.

It is hoped that in the nearest future it will engage in scholarly research on new technologies and the application of the same to academic work and industry.

-     140 computer systems

-     1 1000KVA generating set for power backup

-     4 Laser jet printers

-     2 Desk jet printers

-     2 Scanners
